A question about AMD and RAM clocked above DDR400...

Let's say, for instance, I get some PC-4000 RAM (that'd be, what, DDR500?). If I clocked that RAM down to PC-3200, would I be able to get some really sexy timings out of it?

Or would I be better off just buying PC-3200 RAM that's got low timings to begin with? For what it's worth, I'm not really interested in overclocking my CPU and I've got a 3000+ Winchester core.

This isn't really a hypothetical though; I want to get 2x1 gig sticks of RAM, and I'm trying to decide what would be the best way to go about it. I've currently got 4x512 sticks of Corsair Value RAM in my Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9, and I'm thinking that 2x1 gigs would work out a lot better for me.

If not sexy, it'll be stable.

If you buy pc 4000 im sure you can get decent timings out of it, but there's no guarantee unless specified by the manufacturer. For example here's some GeIL that dances differently at various speeds. http://www.geilusa.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=58

If you get 2x1gb sticks with some "sexy" timings you may get a ~2-5% increase in real world performance. You may get more, or may get less...

Well, I'm not expecting 1-1-1-1@1 volt or anything like that, but I'm just wondering if 2x1 gig sticks of quality RAM will give me a noticeable real world (i.e., game) performance boost as opposed to the 4x512 sticks I've currently got in there which are running at DDR333; something about having all the RAM slots filled.

Bigger performance increase from going 333->400 compared CL3->CL2 timing change. Can't tell you how much though.

Or just buy PC3200 and run a divider 😛 Notice the RAM in my sig? I could get the timings down tighter but I'd rather it be more stable, and I'm missing what like 5 FPS on Quake 3 at 640x480

ribbon13, once again coming through in the clutch with useful information. Thanks a lot.

I'll definitely look into getting a couple gigs of that stuff. Now I'm just wondering what I should do with the Corsair Value RAM I'll have...
