At what point in the future do you think will games refuse to run on a 1gb card?
We already know that many games today don't run as well on 1gb cards as they do on higher vram cards but atleast they can still be played.
However when in the future when most new games come out which don't launch on a 1gb video card, then everyone with 1gb cards will be forced to upgrade.

Most new games? I'd guess a few years.

Before then there will probably be some poorly optimized AAA title that demands 4 GB VRAM, DX 13, and a pony.

My personal opinion is that a 1gb card today is pretty well obsolete. Just because the game fires up and attempts to chug doesnt mean you are going to have anything close to a playable experience, again this is my opinion.

Don't skimp on vram, that will kill playability faster than anything else when it runs out.

I don't they will refuse to run, but you'll have to dial the settings down a bit. I was surprised how well my 7790 1GB in my kid's system did in SW:BF - MED settings @ 1080p at 60 FPS. Of course that game is optimized very well, and I hope future Frostbite games are too.

I should fire up some newer titles and see how well they do.

I'd imagine most 1GB boards all ready limp along in a lot of games, even turned to low settings.

One of my son's pc has an old GTX 570 with 1.2Gb, it runs everything fine at 16*10. Not surprising as I bet a GTX 570 is still above average amongst the full range of users a dev is going to try and sell their game too. No dev is going to cripple their sales by not running on a very wide range or pc's well.

It also depends on your monitor size and res also, of course.

I know people gaming with onboard graphics -- a dedicated card with 1gb of vram will be better than that nearly all the time. If you are only playing games at 720p @ medium detail, then you will probably be able to milk a 1gb card for another 3-5 years.

the first few games that required huge compromises to run with 1GB started to appear around 2014

still some very impressive looking games from last year, like Witcher 3 didn't seem to terribly affected by 1GB, while some more problematic games, like fallout 4 have greatly improved with a few patches...

now I have the impression that DX12 makes things even worse for 1GB cards.

I have a 1gb HD7770. I have been able to play every game that I wanted to. That includes Witcher 3, DAI, and Fallout 4. Those games struggled a lot though, around 30 FPS ave on low at 1080P. I actually ran W3 on my secondary 900p monitor and still usually ran in the high 20s but it was playable. Thing is, with such a low end card, hard to say if it was the vram or just general lack of gpu power.

And yes, I do recall Mantle being a vram hog, at least in the beginning, so DX 12 could make things worse.
