A puzzler! Raid on the board and CDRW on a card or CDRW on the board and Raid on the card?

Whoa. Nice title, huh? I am pondering a Raid 0 setup. Just pondering. Mulling over the possibilities. Here's where I stand.

My mobo has built in Raid capabilities. (Abit KT7R) Currently, I use the one of the ATA-100 slots for my CDRW. I have both my CDR and CDRW as masters on their very own IDE channels. It's worked great for me; zero coasters.

I'm pondering a Raid array. Should I:

1. Keep my CDRW on on the built in Raid controller and put the Raid on a software PCI card? OR

2. Put the Raid array where it "belongs" on the mobo Raid controller and get a PCI ATA-100 card for the CDRW?

Remember, there are no stupid questions if you don't know the answer. :D Has anyone done this? Thank you.

correct me if I am wrong, but what is wrong with:

Onboard raid: host raid 0 (you should have 2 channels)
and regualr atapi hosting the cd/cdr? 9you should have 2 channels here too)

i thought the KT7-Raid had total of 4 channels aka 8 devices max?

Put the CD drives on the via controller.
Put the raid HD's on the highpoint controller.
no need for another card.

Not sure why you aren't just thinking of using the RAID for your IDE hard drives. There wouldn't be an improvement to putting your CD-R/RWs on the RAID system anyway. Put the CD-R/RWs on the IDE channels and put the hard drives on the RAID. No need to buy a separate card either if you want RAID 0.

Oh shoot! (That's not what I really want to say!) I am red, red, red!:eek::eek: right now. You guys are 100% right.

I - AM - A - DUMB - *SS.

I FORGOT that right now, I'm only using 3 IDE devices; one HD and two CDR's. I have the HD on the Highpoint Raid controller, and the two CDR's each as master on the two IDE channels. I will now crawl back under my rock. Thanks guys. (Smiles sheepishly and backs away from keyboard)

The question is; "did I need to post this in the first place?" The answer is "no." After some, ahem...counseling...I was able to answer my own question. My bad. Thanks though.
