I have a very quiet extra psu with 10A on the 12V rail. do yuo think i can sorta rig that for about a month before i can afford a new psu?

im thinking of sorta using the 10a psu to power my hdd/optical drives so that my main 14A psu can power my 6800 or 6600gt for about a month before i can afford a better psu
.
is there any damage of sending current to a optical drive or HDD befroe a the rest of the pc is turned on?

The startup process would go something like this.

1. turn on external psu so my drives will recieve current
2. turn on rest of my pc with main on button so that rest of my pc starts up.

will this casue any damage to parts?

i know but no one's ansewing. apperantly no one knows in GH so i though a specialized forum would do better.

also ,i cant afford a new psu at the moment since im poor so ill have to wait 1-2months.

I have heard a few people talking about this. Your better bet might be to google it online and see what people have to say. I have seen online guides on how to hook two psu's into the same system before. Good luck!

Yes, I have two power supplies in my system (460 & 660), and I turn on the 460 manually (short out the pins to a switch). I have all of the fans, and non-essential hard drives, as well as optical drives connected to the aux power supply, and I've never had a problem with turning them on a second or two before hitting the main power button. I'm also careful to stand by to make sure when the computer gets shut down, I turn off the switch as well, but I don't think it would cause any damage really. If you need any more info, let me know, and I'll be glad to help you out.

You could replace your current power switch with a DPST momentary contact switch and power them both up from the one pushbutton. Or rig a relay to turn on the second when the first comes up to speed.
