a problem with- SUPRISE! wireless LAN

who woulda thought?
anyways, long story short i have a HP orinoco card for my laptop, which is detected perfectly on windows xp home. I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 router. The computer i am on is a real connection to the router. This connection has never failed me. The problem is, i can use the laptop wirelessly for a bout 40 minutes, then the connection to the laptop is shot, and i have to reset the router for things to work. ALl the time my normal connection is fine. The router is the DHCP server, i set it to hold 10 cleints, but there are only 3, so i dont think that is a problem. WEP is turned off, you have to be in my house to have a connection, unfortunalty the range doesnt extend outside. BTW, the DHCP server refreshes every 3 hours.
I would really appreciate some help from all you gurus (i can hear it now- "not another newbie with a wireless lan!")

Check the NIC properties. Some of the drivers default to "allow the OS to put the NIC to sleep" to conserve power.

Good Luck

I would have to agree with what has already been said. I have the Lucent Orinoco Gold card, and there is a setting for low power consumption or full power. Low power can result in the same issues you are speaking of.

card power managmenet is off in the nic props, is that option gonna pop up anywehre else, it seems like a logical place where this could be going wrong. Thanks for hte help so far, but i could stilll use some more!

okay updated card firmware and drivers to the winter 2k2 orinocoset, and the routers firmware as well. I will test this out and see if i get the same problems

Keep us posted because I have the exact same setup, and I'm having the same problem. My loss of connection is not predictable though, it just happens occasionally. It's a pain in the butt though, because I have to get off the couch go down in the basement and uplug the router. :| I'm a networking dummy, but I cannot figure out why the router has to be reset. It seems that refreshing the orinoco card would cause the router to assign a new i.p. address.
