A (Probably Dumb) Blu-Ray Question

I haven't gotten into Blu-Ray yet, but after my P50G10 arrived today I'm finding myself wanting to. I was thinking about grabbing a TV series on BD (I already have a PS3), but I had to find this out first - do TV series on Blu-Ray come in 1080p or 720p? I would assume it's in 1080p, but I just wanted to check since they're not broadcast in 1080p, and I've never noticed any TV series torrents in 1080p (probably just not high demand?).

edit: I finally found one online BD TV series listed as "1080p", but I guess now the question is - is that standard? Most of them don't specify.

You will be hard pressed to find a Blu-ray that isn't 1080p. I remember a few 1080i back when they first came out. I don't remember any 720p.

However, I assume that if they put, for example, a game that originally aired in 720p on Blu-ray they would simply upconvert it to 1080p...but have no idea.

What difference would it make? Your TV (or PS3) will do the upscaling to any material that isn't 1080p.

TV series is not going to show off the blu-ray in quite the way you may think it will.

If your looking to judge the value of the blu-ray try and pick a movie or two. Live free die hard is excellent reference material for both video and audio quality. Transformers revenge of the fallen is also another good pick as are many more movies.

Regardless you may want to pick up a top quality blu-ray movie to judge the value of blu-ray if that is what you arel ooking to do.

I've seen a few good blu-ray movies before, very impressive. It's just that I recently bought my first HDTV and while I enjoy both movies and TV shows, I find the TV shows that I really like a bit more re-watchable than even really good movies.

I ran to the store tonight, splurged on a BD player. I was also going to grab either a season of BSG or season one of Lost (figured it's the most action-y season), but they had neither. Went ahead and grabbed season five of Lost, figured I'd refresh myself before the premiere of the final season. It looks awesome. And it is in 1080p, to answer my own question.

I'm looking for a Blu Ray player that downscales to 480i.

I asked the salesmen at Best Buy and they looked at me funny.

🙁

I'm surprised they didn't laugh -- well, not really, they don't know more than what the box says on any of their products.

1) They will all downscale to 480i through the composite output
2) Why don't you just go to Wal-Mart and buy a $30 DVD player for that 480i TV? Then save your money and buy / rent DVD's.
