We need more info. What is the make and model of the DVD burner? Have you been to the manufacturer's site to see if they have updated software?

When you say "portable," what is the interface? USB? SCSI? Firewire?

If it is USB, just hot plug it and it should be recognized by XP. XP has DVD drivers built in.

Umm, well my XP needs to be hit, cause it doesnt, it recognizes a USB mass storage device, but never actually finishes the job and puts it up there with the other CD drives.

If it is USB, it probably needs a separate power source. Does it have a power module? I have three external burners at present - they only come with Win98 drivers because XP does need drivers.

Have you tried using the Add Hardware feature in Control Panel?

Does it have any sort of nomenclature plate or decal on the bottom or back? It has no badge at all?

i wish, its just a grey box with a drive sticking out the front, and the drive, like most others, simply says its abilities.

Ill assume by the lack of a response that my next step would be to open it up and pop it in as an actual drive and see if that takes me anywhere? ill try that...
