a Poll on ads in the web

I'm doing a small paper conserning adverts in web pages and I want to know how YOU, yes you, feel about pages that throw a bunch of ads at YOUR face. So tell me your thoughts. I'm listening...

Maxthon's built-in ad blocker keeps me from even seeing them.

To be honest, a few banner ads don't bother me but when you start having crap moving around the screen and playing sound, etc. I get pretty annoyed.

i don't mind them as long as they are small and not going out of their way to grab my attention with the flashing lights and sound and whatnot.

Ads make the web largely free to surf. Ads are your friends. Your very annoying friends that never know when to leave... but your friends nonetheless. 🙂

The ads where they've copied the tv style of 'in-between' web page views ala IGN aren't as bad as the in your face you can't read the content whilst I'm over it flash ads.

Agreed.

Whilst I understand why websites need ads, some of the ad's on the net (anandtech.com's homepage is dreadful of this) decorate your screen in flash. Stick to non-cpu-sucking/static ad's, google text ads or no ads. Otherwise ill just block them.

Yeah anandtech home page does suck with so many flashing ads I can't even stand to read anything there.

I hate the ads in article's that are linked to certain words. I always move my mouse around when reading the article and move over one of them. Causing something to pop up and block the text.

Yup.

I don't mind banners on webpages or the between-pages ads that IGN and others use. even most pop-ups aren't that bad. it's when the ads use sounds, move around the page (blocking text), and go full screen that I get really annoyed.

flashing ad with loud sounds spread full screen over 2 19" screens = most annoying thing evar.

I ignore them. I understand that they are a way for a site to make some money to keep the site running. However, there are very few of the links that I'll use to click through to buy something.

I can't stand pop-up ads, then again with Opera I don't have to worry about them.

Agree the really flashing eyes are annoying as hell. They physically bother me having to see something flashing around in the corner of my eye. I think the google ads are the best ones out there. Usually just simple and off to the side without going overboard when it comes to decorations. Really any ad that does that is great, I just think the Google ads exmplify it the best.

As long as the ads aren't intrusive, I just ignore them. If they are popping up all over the window and are in my way of reading the info on the page, then I'll go find some other site to get info from or I'll block the ads server.

The passive ones - such as the ones on AT - they are there - I never read or click on them.

If they are popups - then my hate-o-meter goes up and I visit that site less and less.

Edit: To clarify - popups = the ones that escape firefox / google toolbar in IE

Thanks for all of your answers. Have adds had any real effect on you? Have you ever followed an add link because the add was interesting or have you ever gone so far that you've actually bought something after seeing an add on a web page? Someone wise (or less wise) person said that adds have been effective whenever they cause somekind of a reaction on the viewers brain. even a negative reaction is better than no reaction.

I buy things from google ads all the time. frequently, I'm searching google for product reviews of stuff I'm intending to buy anyways, and if an ad quotes a price lower than amazon/newegg, I definitely check it out.
