Went up to do a shoot, and by the time I got where I was going, it was rainy and cloudy and blah.

Well sunrise peeked out and did light the clouds up somewhat, but I'm still not quite sure about it. So I converted to B&W and did a quick edit. I know I have a couple blown highlight areas, and I'll fix that in the final but just did a mock up here. I think it needs just a bit more exposure overall.

What do you think of the shot?

That's my thought too. I love the colors, but the clouds are just too much, cover some of the moutnains, and not any sky showing. I'm going back next weekend on my way to an air show so I will try again for something a bit better color wise.
 
for the color version, it looks like two great pictures (top, with the dark clouds; and bottom, with the log) joined together to make a so-so pic. Too much information going on, and I believe both top and bottom part can be in it's own canvas.

the BW version however, both parts are seamlessly merged.

I'm not really sure what you mean.

That is what it looked like with the naked eye. Of course, to get that, I did have to combine exposures. But if you were standing there - that's what you would have seen 🙂
 
Looking at it a bit more....the only thing that I don't like is how the horizon line (because of the lake) appears to be in the middle...didn't notice that when shooting. It's naturally there when placing the log at the bottom of the frame. Have to get a lower angle next time, but cropping will work this time.

okay, the point I am trying to make is, imo, your pic would be better if it is chopped into two.

well, my cropping is horrible, especially the second one with the log; but my point is, i felt there is too much going on in your pic, hence, breaking it apart seems more pleasant.

for the crop of the log, it might be useful to include the mountains as perspective, but leave out the sky.

Well...the log is there to provide an interesting foreground. And I think it does just that. I wanted to have a good foreground/middleground/background in this shot - and if I had two seperate shots, you'd lose that somewhat in some. There are plenty of other compositions to be had there - but they were not going to work at that time so hopefully when I go back. I liked this one and intended to turn it into a B&W from the start.

skulkingghost - waaay oversaturated. BTW I did not edit the color version, it is just there for comparison. All I did with it was blend exposures and remove another guy & camera/tripod.

Mine isn't - ignore the other edited one.

I don't like the color version as I would prefer the sky be very different. Different tastes perhaps.
 
The thing about the original color version is... I would never have guessed the color of the foreground had I never seen it. So, to me, that makes the original very worthwhile.

The B&W really emphasizes the textures, makes the sky look more dramatic.

I'd be totally thrilled to get that shot, btw.

In all honesty, all of the edits beside your own, OdiN, have been, ummm... yuck.

I did some filtering, dodging and burning to get the effect and wanted to get more contrast/drama in the shot. I'm thinking of submitting this one for the B&W category in a gallery showing I'm doing.
 
Indeed, they are both excellent. HDR/combined exposures always look a bit strange to me, even though I know it's supposed to be closer to how it actually looks in person. The B&W takes away some of that strangeness to me and looks more photographically natural. Not sure if that makes any sense...

Yes, it makes sense, and that's one thing that I'm working on right now.

B&W is my favorite medium, so combining exposures or doing HDR and converting to B&W is something I will be doing more of. I think it works very well.

And the color version is very close to what it looked like to the naked eye. I tried to keep it that way vs. getting too crazy. It's a bit brighter and a tad more saturation perhaps - as the lake/trees, etc. were not lit as much, hence longer exposure to bring it up to normal.
