I just want to personally say welcome to Perry, who is the only other South African cruncher I know, even if it is just online! :D I hope you will enjoy your stay with the finest DC TeAm and the finest TeAmMates in the world and hope you'll have a lot of fun!:D

Perry has been crunching solo and TA is the first TeAm he's joined. He's active in a couple of projects, CPN, Seti, Einstein, QMC and some more. He's stats are here and like for me, DC is a passionate obsession for him! ;)

If there's any questions Perry, plz don't hazitate to ask!

Welcome to you Perry! :)

You'll be the 2nd South African cruncher I've met online - and it's great company you're in to! ;)

Edit: Since Johan posted a link to your detailed stats, Perry, I'll include mine HERE

Welcome Perry to the TeAm - great seeing you here! :)

Perry, could I suggest that you talk to Johan about TAS - our mini-team which is just now crunching QMC for theis month ...
You'd be very welcome - and it does not conflict with TeAm - it enhances! :D

Hi all,

Thanks for such a warm welcome. As Johan said, I have been cruching solo for a long time. Was always amazed at his progress in the SETI@Home - Classic lists, but was not far behind. Was a good chase, and I hope to add as much with BOINC.

Glad to find other nut cases that are as mad about DC as I am. :D

Cheers.

Got a question for you guys:

I may go into a bit of known detail, but just to get us on the same page, here goes:

In a multiprocessor envoronment (say 2), if you are running normal stuff, you would probably get between 50% and 70% improvment having the second processor just because the the way it is all written and stuff. Now if you run stuff like the old SETI Classic, you would probably get close to 100% impovement because you can dedicate the processing to a processor. Same with BOINC.

Now what about these new dual cores? On an Intel chip with HT, you get an improvement (not the full 100% because it is still only a single chip and the HT is a bit of a cheat anyway. But if you go to the Pentium D's that will be better.

Looking at the AMD chips, and this is where my question comes in, are the dual cores faster? My AMD 3500+ is actually slower (in total) than the 3.0GHz P4's. All the reviews on chips talk about normal office / business / game environments. But if you are looking at something that will dedicate processing to a second chip (even a theoretical HT chip) will that not be faster? ie, will same speed Intel chips not be way faster that AMD chips - dual core or not? And therefore better at DC. And are the clock ratings of the AMD chips assuming both cores running? So a 4000+ would still be maybe two 2200MHz chips giving an overall performance of 4000+

Any ideas.

Perry.

Welcome Perry! I noticed the second SA flag in the Free-DC stats and thought: "Hehe, looke like Johna got a new fellow!" ;)

To your question:

For the current TAS project - QMC@Home - my X2 3800+ needs about 12 hours per WU per core = 2 WUs every 12 hours. My Athlon XP 3200+ needs about 13 hours per WU, but that's just a single one. They both run the same type of memory and stuff, so they are somewhat comparable. According to the old XP rating, the X2 should be something like a 4600 or so. On my P4 2,8 HT box, though, a WU needs about 24 hours with HT = 2 WUs every 24 hours.

As you can see, the X2 wins 'em all. So, yes, dual core is the way to go when it comes to dedicated DC crunching. AMD and the X2s are more for the enthusiast I'd say, because they're more expensive but untill Conroe (the next Intel generation) hits the shelves, they're also the better performers. If you're on a tight budget, a Pentium D will give you a good bang for the buck, especially the new D 805 (as can be read on the TA front page)

Hope this helps a bit.

Welcome aboard TheBorg (Perry)

You have come to be best forum and DC team in the world (what? me biased? :p )

About the dual cores, YES for dedicated crunching, they are the top of the heap. I run AMD X2 machines and they really are a full 2 of their single core GHz equivalents.

Although they're that at 50/50 share with Einstein@Home, I just added an XP2500 and a Dual MP1800 to the QMC@Home project, so there's a little help. :)
