A part fell off of my x800GTO

Here's a pic of a similar x800 GTO (but not mine). I have highlighted the part that fell off.

Pic of x800GTO

Can someone please tell me what this part is and what it is for.

I recently put together a C2D system and everyhitng, including the damaged card seemed to work for about an hour. Then, the motherboard crapped out. I had originally thought that the board was just DOA, but I just had a thought that *possibly* the damaged video card killed the mobo. Is that possible?

I have a new mobo coming tomorrow, and I would like to know if I should use the x800 again or not.

From the pic, it looks like it is a voltage regulator, not sure through... If you have the piece that fill off, it should have some kind of markings on it. Just do a google search on them...

The only thing it says on it is "1R8BA" and ""5313J". I couldn't find any useful information about it from google. Any more ideas? Can not having this part damage my motherboard?

Quite likely. If it's part of the power regulation circuitry (which it appears to be), the card could be pulling too much or too little from the board, which could cause it to fry.

are you sure there was something there to begin with?

edit: i lost a capacitor off the back of a 9800 pro when (somehow) the pressure point on the back of an arctic vga cooler managed to move on the back of the card through the capacitors on the bottom of the socket. still works just fine so i'm not sure what it did.

Yes I'm sure the part was there to begin with because I have it!

Cool, that definitley looks like the part. Now, will a missing "Power chocke coil" cause damage to a motherboard? I have tested this damaged card in a different system and it worked fine, but was only in for a few minutes to see if it would work. I'm also considering soldering the part back on. Recommendations?

Don't worry. It's common practice to slap extra parts on just for show.

Not really :p

Haha... I know its there for SOMETHING. I just was wanting to know if anyone knew that not having the part would kill the mobo... or just the card.
