This would still be find for a general use system for someone. Most people won't know or feel the difference between 845 and later boards.

This is directly off the website:

Product Requirements

* ATX Case
* Supported processor
* Supported RAM
* The Rest of the System

I especially like the "The Rest of the System" line, that ones pretty good. I would think about changing your thread title, not a bad deal for someone who wants a budget PC but I don't think it's the best deal out there for that route.

no, it won't. compgeeks has been selling barebones kits for years, just not many recently.

It would only take about 10-15 minutes to assemble. And it's generally easier to install a CPU with the board outside the case anyways.

---
since the motherboard already has video and sound, all you need is a CPU and hard drive (plus OS) to make it a complete system. I'd probably go for a Celeron 2GHz and a $35AR 80GB (or $39.99AR/AC 160GB at OD) hard drive. That's around $200 total after tax and shipping for me (in CA).

ALso, 533MHz FSB is the max front side bus speed. It supports 400MHz and 533MHz:
"Manufacturer's product description
The AX4GR is Intel Socket 478 motherboard based on the ATX form factor featuring the Intel 845G chipset. As a high-performance chipset built in the motherboard, the AX4GR motherboard can support Intel Socket 478 Pentium 4 with 400MHz and 533MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) clocks. This motherboard features integrated VGA engine in chipset as well as 4X AGP slot. According to different customer's requirements, the Intel 845G chipset memory interface supports DDR SDRAM devices with densities of 64, 128, 256, and 512MB and the maximum memory size can be up to 2GB. The onboard IDE controller supports Ultra DMA 33/66/100 mode and the transfer rate up to 100MB/s. Further flexibility can be achieved by taking advantage of the Communication and Network Riser (CNR) card that allows audio and modem configuration on a single baseboard design. Besides, the AX4GR has an AC97 CODEC chipset onboard, providing high performance and magic surround stereo sound to let people enjoy working with it. Now, enjoy all features from AOpen AX4GR motherboard. "

I didn't say it was a bad deal if you read what i posted and I quote "not a bad deal for someone who wants a budget PC". I think it's a pretty good deal but there are some other good ones out there as well if you look. I am by no means saying this is a bad deal, it's not at all, it's actually pretty good as I said earlier.

Nothing any of us would necessarily put a P4 in for ourselves, this deal nevetheless has it's place in the pantheon of possiblities for someone else demanding a cheap p4 system starter and stubbornly lacking the willingness to be educated further.

Let them eat cake!

If I had a P4 2.0A just setting around, do you think this is a good deal to get it back into circulation.

It supports socket 478. I know that you can get either a P4 or a Celeron w/a socket 478 - I just dont know what type of P4 or Celeron you can get. :frown:

The 845 chipset does not support Prescott P4's or Celeron D's.
Here's the CPU's it does support.

So basically it needs all the parts that are expensive?

Gotcha. Not that good of a deal when you get down to what you'd have to put into it to make it a fully-functional computer.

I am currently looking into building a cheap (~$200) server that I want to expand to a "media center" in 3 or so months.
Right now it should just be a file server and I might get a video card with TV-out to watch Divx on my TV ...
