i was just looking on newegg.com at AMD 64 FX's, just kinda admiring them lol

<begin n00bishness>

and i noticed that the ones with 940 pins, are socket 940
so i wondered if there was some correlation between them

but i could not find the pin count of a Socket 939 chip

So yea, is the socket number how many pins the chip has? or what...
also is the higher the number of a socket a better socket?

</end n00bishness>

Here is the info AMD has about the subject:

Q: Why are the AMD64 processors moving to socket 939?

A: AMD believes in bringing customer-centric technology to market that benefits partners and end users. By offering the AMD Athlon 64 processors in a 939-pin package, AMD is enabling performance enhancements and next-generation platform innovations with the use of a cost-effective four-layer circuit board and higher performing unbuffered DDR memory (Compared to registered DDR memory in the 940-pin part).

Hope that helps you.

Everything is going to be moving towards Socket 939, and yes that is the pin count, 940 is Opetron and old FX only, uses registered memory. Go for 939 if your getting one.
