Today my Inova X1 torch from performancefieldgear on eBay arrived in the mail.

It's a cool little light. The build quality is really good. It feels fairly weighty for a light of its size (just under four inches long), and well balanced. Everything is tight, and the spring piston on the inside to ensure a good circuit feels tough and resiliant, as does the rubber switch on the end. The X1 is a lot easier to grip than I expected, despite its smooth sides.

The endcap switch (tighten down for constant on, loosen a half turn for momentary, and another half for off) works really well, but I'd have liked some sort of tactile feedback, just because I don't like the feeling of unscrewing the cap. But like I said, the system works, and thanks to the rubber O ring, it works perfectly underwater (I took it into the pool tonight).

If there's one thing that bothers me about the light, it's that there's dust under the lens. Boo. Oh well, it's no big deal.

The single LED produces a lot of light, and the projector lens gives it a fairly long throw, but at the expense of any spill light. A dim halo is all you get if you want ambient light.

The next Inova I buy is probably going to be the XO, which kind of reminds me of a bigger X1, even though the systems are very different. That, or I'll get a UV X5 in black, just for cool factor.

Haha, well actually, I just like the Inova lights because they're so stylish. I'm not a collector or anything.

Yet. :Q

I've got the X1 and the X5. They are both "niche" flashlights in my opinion. For the price you can get much brighter lights. But not with the same run-time. If you want a brighter light, look at the Streamlight TL-2, which I've seen online for about the same price as the X5 (~$40). It is a huge step up in brightness, but a big step down in run time, too. Same batteries, though. And if you really want a small, bright light, get a Surefire E2 variant. I have the SF E2e, and having owned the TL-2, the X5, and the SF E2e, the E2e has spent much more time in my pocket by far than the X1, X5, and TL-2 have combined. It is also more expensive. Really, I think the brightness of the E2e spoiled me. You can always carry spare batteries ;)

OTOH, it does all depend on what you wish to use it for. For me, however, the E2e is the best I've run across.

You have been marked to be ambushed by a couple guys who will shine their SureFire M3's and M6's (with the H.O. lamp assembly) into your eyes some dark night. FYI.

The Surefire E2E looks really nice. I mainly grabbed the X1 because the price was right and I wanted to start small, and I wanted an LED light.

From what I've heard about Surefire, they make really good, really bright flashlights.

Yup. Their warranty is really nice, too (You break it, they'll fix it). Only downside is price, but I won mine in a raffle, so it wasnt a downside for me.

The specs look a little weird. Namely, Surefire in the L4 manages 65 lumens for one hour with a regulated 5 watt LED, while using two 123A lithium batteries. The XM-3 is claiming 72 lumens for two hours with a regulated 3 watt LED, using two AA batteries. I'd head over to some place like candlepowerforums and ask around.

It is a 3w, not a 5w, hence a little more battery life, and theres gotta be a little variation in lumen calculation... those machines are expensive

That is my point, though. Lower wattage + higher output always makes me suspicious. Like I said, I'd be asking the guys over at candlepowerforums what they think about it before buying.

they're all for it over there

btw, the led itself is rated at 72 lumens, but at 600ma i'm not sure how much actual output it would be

Is there a light about the size of the Inova X1 good for pilots?: Two different brightness levels - one for preflighting the plane (outside), then a lower level to use while flying. Quick switchable white/red lenses (for same times as above).

BTW, I spoke with the guy that owns flashlights4less.com at a gun show once. Nice guy.
