Problem with the 335d was it really wasn't that fast and it didn't save that much gas over the new 328s. Plus it was really expensive. In america they had to put rebates and huge discounts on them. A lot of them even got used as loaner cars.

Yeah, the new 328 with the 2.0T made the 335d sorta redundant.
 
But it's neat, dammit.

I was curious about how it sounded, so I pulled up a quick video on Youtube.

It appears to be as I thought- not very diesel. I think it's humorous that it's hard to dell the difference between a modern, high-tech diesel and a modern, high-tech (read: direct-injected) gas engine. I don't quite understand what makes the gas DI cars so loud; obviously it has something to do with the fuel injection, but I don't understand why it's about as loud as something that essentially runs on 'spark knock.'
 
I'll bet the 325d or 328d or whatever they call it will be sweet, too.

Yes, they have reversed.

The diesels are now much quieter, and the gas engines are now noisier.

I suspect that people don't like something that's unique. It's the same reason I bought my Z4M for $18,000 under sticker brand new.

It's definitely not slow though. I'm ok with a high 13 second quarter mile. Then again there are PnP chips that take it to 550 lbft at the wheels. But I shall be good in the name of the warranty.

The 335d isn't really that unique like a Z4 M because a Z4 M performed better than normal Z4s. The 335d just sort of did with gas but it cost a lot. when new, it was well more expensive than a 335i and only slightly faster than a 328i e90 (and im talking stock here). plus it was heavier than both so it didn't handle as well. Then the enthusiasts didn't like it becuase it didnt come in manual, and obviously people who wanted to save money on gas probably did the math and figured it'd take forever to save enough gas to make up for the fact it cost more than the 335i.

I remember when the guy i knew bought one (and at the time I told him it was a dumb idea still) it was like $4500 eco diesel credit and another $5000 off sticker because it was april 2012 and it was a 2011 model (and more or less rotting on the lot, i think he could have gotten another $5000 off if he had known how to haggle)

As for the Z4 I never got why the e85 didn't sell so well. some people didnt like the look I guess, but i don't think you could say the E85 was ugly. the e89 Z4 I think is gorgeous, too bad they didn't make an M version.

The 320d will be a nice experiment. I mean lets say it gets 35mpg combined. so people who have long commutes might want it, but it has 180hp and 280 torque so itll be the slowest F30. I'd imagine they won't be able to price it much more than say $2-3k more than an equivalent 328i, but it might just work.

I love those cars, held resale better than I expected to. Wanted one since they came here, cause tooooorque! 😀
 
Ya fine engine. Really a shame people didnt love it. If they ever get cheap enough ill snag one for a DD.
 
Wait, have you done research into the 335D before buying it ? i'm in the process of getting rid of mine... i have random stutter on highway, dealer keep claiming its bad fuel, hope you have better experience then me. I had it tow twice since 2010. They didn't sell enough of these but there are some issues. Did you also check if yours was one of the recall for the exhaust issue?

Yep I researched and that's why I settled on a CPO. There were 2 recalls performed on the car, I don't have the paperwork in front of me though. It has had two warranty pit stops as well, one for an iPod cable and one for a software issue. Both occurred in 2010.

I just picked up a new tdi passat. First diesel car and I'm loving it. I've been getting around 42 mpg on my 75 mile round trip commute. Huge difference coming from a 5.4 v8 F150. Enjoy the new ride!
