Looks like they're doing malware and traffic analysis to pinpoint the malicious servers, and creating firewall rules on the fly to block communication with them. This definitely has merit. Most firewall installations (either network/edge firewalls or software-based on the host) are configured to allow the inside hosts to communicate with any outside server as long as the communication is initiated by the inside host.
