Through my hands have passed 10,000 Compaq Deskpro units.
They look exactly like this:

Every time we get a new shipment, we assume that we've finally handled every last one of them.

Every time we get a new shipment, we're proved wrong. I want to cry.

Oh, I used to work on those during my old job.

They SUCK and I hate them very much. In fact, I hate all Compaqs very much. If nothing else, Compaqs are proof that there is a devil, and he hates humanity and wants to see us suffer🙁

Basically, our procedure is now "Don't even try to fix them. There will be more. If it doesn't work, scrap it. And if it really angers you, the hammer is available to help."

we only have the tower models

Those are easier to get into, but IMO, harder to work on. And they don't stack as nicely as the desktop units.

We dumped those long ago. All HP Compaq dc5000 sff's here now.

(I'd rather have the old Deskpros. Sigh.)

You LIKED them? Granted, I haven't had a chance to play with a dc5000, but there's NO WAY they're this damned evil. Non-standard CMOS battery, very picky about RAM (and we can't find a pattern as to what works and what doesn't other than the "FOR COMPAQ DESKPRO" lines from a handful of manufacturers), satanitcally evil-to-open chassis, proprietary PSU form factor, CPU slot oriented parallel to the board. I really can't think of a positive thing to say about them...

Did you know that I actually once got a Deskpro to run on mixed RAM? Mind you, it was mighty selective about what was plugged into which IDE channel, and it was a slow POS, but I was pretty impressed. It took hours of work to get it running again after adding the RAM, but I got it.
