A need for 2 gigs yet?

Is there a need for 2 gigs of ram yet for gaming?
I have been trying to decide weather or not I need it for awhile now.

My PC compents are: Asus K8Ne Deluxe Mobo, AMD 64 3000+, BFG 6800 Ultra OC, 1gig Muskin PC3200 Ram.

Just looking to see what you guys here think on 2gb of ram to be used only for a gaming rig.

Thanks,
Tommy

well i hear fear and bf2 needs two gigs but i run bf2 fine on a gig and havent played fear yet. the only reason you would need 2gigs right now is because they need to program the game better since its a pos.

I am currently playing BF2 and it doesnt seem to be doing to bad at all, but everyone that has went from 1 to 2 gigs says it makes a world of difference.
Thats why I was wandering. Hate to throw 300 away on something I dont really need.

i;m runnin on 2gb and i seldom game, jus the occassional cs and wc3

its definitely better when u run ur comp 24/7, using bittorrent and other programs

some reason bf2 outa no were goes to 15fps than goes back to 80-100 i dont know why. but it doesnt bother me enough yet

Sounds like another case of an intentionally screwed up game so people will run out and buy more memory and new video cards.

BF2 is really badly optimised. Even future games should do fine with 1GB for a while
But well 2GB is benefitial to massive computing such as Photoshop, video editing, etc

I agree with BF2 not being optimised well, I have seen other games need 2GB's to run though. The FEAR demo with all setting jacked up seems to utilize it, I have also seen some information regarding Quake4 and Unreal '07 also needing 2GB's for quality settings.

No real need for 2GB yet. If you only had 512MB, i would say upgrade to 2GB, but 1GB runs everything perfectly at the moment (other than BF2 at max settings). I play BF2 with all settings at atleast medium, and it's perfectly smooth.

I too can play BF2 at medium settings smoothly, but if I had 2GB I would most likey be able to play at High settings smoothly.

So while 2GB is not necessary, it can definitley be useful if you can afford it.

Allow me to just sup up all the info here:

1.) Do you need 2GB of memory right now ? -- No Way
2.) Will it provide marginal benefits right now and give you some future proofing -- Absolutely

I went to 2 GB cause I have enough running that WoW was suffering from lack of ram. Well Worth it 🙂

You don't need to spend $300... I spent $190 on 2 GB of RAM and it makes a pretty significant difference in World of Warcraft vs. 1 GB. I usually have a web browser open at the same time for checking thottbot and allakhazam. So that takes up some more memory and only leaves about 700 MB of the game with only 1 GB. Now that I have 2 GB, I have about 800 MB of free physical memory when I'm playing the game.

I also read somewhere that fragmentation can be a problem with RAM just like a hard drive. So with hardly any free physical RAM, fragmentation problems will be more pronounced just like with hardly any free hard drive space. So whether the game actually NEEDS more RAM or not... having the extra space AVAILABLE could be beneficial.

*EDIT* Also... for you BF2 players. Set all details to max and then hop on a 64 player server that's almost full and then tell me you don't need more than 1 GB 😉

Yes, this was posted in a different thread. However, the question hasn't been answered:

I mostly game. Which would be better: 2 GB of DDR333 at T2 command rate or 1 GB DDR400 at T1 command rate? I have an Athlon 64 3000+ and GeForce 6800 NU. Does anyone have 2 GB on an Athlon 64 running at 400 MHz? I can't seem to find 512 MB sticks with single rank (single sided memory)

I have 2 GB on an Athlon 64 running at 416 Mhz at 1T. If you play the games that benefit from having more than 1 GB of RAM, then of course the 2 GB of slower memory would be better than the 1 GB of faster memory. Athlon 64's don't thrive off memory bandwidth... the difference the extra RAM would make would greatly outweight the slightly slower performance of the lower bandwidth if the game can actually use more than 1 GB... or... more than about 750 MB since Windows and programs running in the background use about 250 MB normally.

2Gb of ram would not allow you to go from medium to high settings. You should be able to do high settings now with the machine you have. My machine is not as powerful as yours and I can run high settings (I don't have 2gigs of ram either).

YES...
Anything less than 2GB of memory is only fit for playing solitare and checking email.

BTW, With 2GB or more of memory, you will be extra cool and girls will be attracted to you. 😛

2Gbs? You must be out of date. I'm going to order 2x1Gb sticks to beef up to 3Gb.

You don't run dual-channel then?

It was just a little sarcasm but I'm bumping up the memory. 2x512+2x1gb=3gb

Well I believe it would. I get lots of stuttering when I go to high settings.
I have no idea what your specs are, but if they are less powerful than mine and you can run at high settings on 1GB RAM, then you are definitely one of the few that can claim this.

Just like dual-core, 2GB should definitely be on the top of your list if it's financially sound. In other words, if you can afford $250 Crucial Ballistix 2x512MB, just drop down to OCZ Platinum 2x1GB. Small loss in sheer speed (bandwidth-wise) but you get the benefit of double the amount of RAM.
