I emphatically second the EMu 1212M.

I got the 1820M with EmulatorX and the card is amazing.
Between the crystal clear mic pre's, the amazing converters(yes that *is* what 192 sounds like) and the built-in DSP(watch your cpu meter *not* jump) all you need to add is something like Guitar Rig and you're *golden*.
Guitar Center here in Raleigh has them on sale for $150 AR til the end of the month.
Amazingly good deal, IMO.

Now that I'm on the M-Audio site, the firewire solo is looking for intriguing. It's designed for guitar/vocal recording and that's really what I'm looking for.
 
For Worksation). M-Audio Revolution or the latest Creative ZS should do before you spend serious money on a sound card.
 
ahh. I was gonna suggest the RME card. I have the 96/36 and its rock solid at 3ms. I don't even think about it.
