Did you know that almost everything you put into your mouth is controlled by a half-dozen or so companies?
Did you know that these companies are fighting every day to make sure you don't ever truly know the extent to which they control the food industry?
Did you know that these companies are preventing you from fair, clear labels that would explain how and where your food comes from?
Did you know that many contemporary problems we face, from the environment, to health care reform, to heath in general (diabetes, e coli, precious puberty, etc.), to illegal immigration, all stem in many ways from the food industry?

Please. Run, do not walk, and go see this movie now! And then call your Congressional Representative.

Thank you.

Edit: Think of the movie "Super Size Me" on a larger scale.

Outrageous claims. I plan on watching this documentary, but being a professional in the food industry I know how outrageous the above posted claims really are.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but none of the above claims seem "outrageous" to me... in fact, they all seem fairly plausible.

Plausible, yes. I guess I just hold a certain bias being that I'm in the food industry and know that they are not true.

Who do you work for? Cargill? ADM? Tyson?

Come on, a country (FDA) that has already approved CLONED meat without so much as a peep of debate needs to get its head examined.

To compare, the EU prohibits just about all bio-engineered anything from being produced over there. Why do we deserve the hormone-filled, genetically-spliced, antibiotic-stuffed, corn-fed crap in this country?

Haven't seen this documentary, but I'm fairly familiar with the topic at this point. I tend to agree to an extent with a lot of what they're saying. You look back at the 1960s and earlier and people ate giant breakfasts, good lunches, and huge dinners, and didn't have anywhere near the obesity problem we have today. Part of it could be due to less physical activity these days, but a huge part of it is due to the absolute crap that gets put into a lot of the food we eat that our bodies just don't digest very well.

As a matter of fact, I work for none of the above. I did work for Tyson for about two years, but since then I have worked for privately owned companies that hold large market shares for their respective products.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with cloned meat. There is nothing different about it.

but a huge part of it is due to the absolute crap that gets put into a lot of the food we eat that our bodies just don't digest very well.

Doesn't that argue against food causing obesity? If its not digesting very well, then nutrients and calories aren't being extracted from it.

Oh, and while you're doing that research, be sure to look up the company Monsanto and how they are working very hard to sue any farmer who does not use their patented, genetically-altered seeds and instead chose to "clean" their own seeds.

Well, if all of this is a lie, I vote that the executives of all these companies be "invited" to be injected with high-fructose corn syrup every day for a year and see how long they live.

Eh?

Which point is outrageous? Of course it's in the industry's self interest in labeling as little as possible, that's an obvious incentive. And with all the salmonella/e coli outbreaks in food recently, i don't see how you can argue that health is a big question.

You should read about Smithfield food and how they contaminated the water around them due to their huge pig farming operations back in the day, i feel bad for anyone living near their operations :Q

You think they're putting something magic in the food? Because the old excess calories = (calories in - calories out) formula still holds, as far as I know. Yes there are things that can have minor effects on metabolism and body chemistry, but in the long term these effects are dominated by a very simple principle. People need to start taking responsibility for what they eat.

Also, recent studies suggest that an increase in food intake accounts for a large majority of obesity increases, rather than lack of exercise. You want to be slim? Put down the fork and stop blaming teh evel corporashuns.

Edit - I also find your idea that we are eating stuff that "our bodies just don't digest very well" very curious indeed. If your body isn't digesting it then you should just crap it out and it won't contribute to your weight gain.

Go down to the local farmers market this time of year. Start your own small garden for things like tomatoes, bell peppers, beans, etc. It may not be a year-round solution, but hey, I for one get a lot of satisfaction eating things that I myself planted.

/plans to check out documentary film

There are already strict guidelines set for food labeling. It was a congressional act that all food companies are required to abide by. If you have an issue with how food products are being labeled you should contact your congressman/woman.

I bet you're one of those people who watched a documentary on how evil Wal-mart is, so you boycott Wal-mart and only shop at Target. :p

Exactly. Buy Organic. Read food labels. Quit buying anything mass-produced by the large companies. Support the no-name local growers. Support farmer's markets. Support free-range livestock. And PLEASE quite eating at fast-food restaurants...or even chain restaurant in general. Buy local. Buy seasonal.

But first. See the movie. Call your Congressional representative.

Actually, Wal-Mart is viewed in a positive light for change in this movie.

Say whatever happened to that peanut company that knowingly shipped out salmonella tainted peanuts? They need to draw and quarter that asshole CEO who knew about it but didn't want to give up profits. Several people died as a result.

My grandparents lived on a farm in North Dakota and pretty much raised [pigs, chickens, etc] or grew [fruit, veggies, etc] everything they ate - talk about a huge amount of fat content [it was the best damn food I've ever had in my life]. But they weren't fat by any standards because they didn't sit on their asses all day [nearly everyone I know sits at their desk during the day then watches tv or sits in front of a computer during the night] - and most of the food didn't have chemical preserved "crap" like prepackaged food does.

Chemistry can do a body good - but holy hell - when I die - my body will probably be preserved for at least 200 years...

Food, Inc is another documentary in a long line of movies that prove just how screwed up we've become as a society [well..in America at least].

I agree. The issue is far from over for that now defunct company.

If I were Obama...

Ban all production of genetically-engineered food products.
All restaurants must have calorie information next to menu items.
Fat tax of 100% on all fast-food items, targeting McDonald's especially. (Funds health care directly.)
Investigate members of the Corn Lobby for crimes against humanity.
Ditto for executives of ADM, Tyson, Cargill, etc.
Ban high-fructose-corn-syrup.
Subsidize organic/free-range farmers only.
Make it illegal to patent seeds, etc.
Prohibit any former "food industry" employee from working for the FDA, etc.
Enforce food labeling laws to include information on treatment of animals, pesticides used, etc.
