A motherboard, with a choice of chipset?

A processor upgrade involves a speed increment. More RAM involves greater volume.

A chipset change involves changed functionality which materially affects the entire motherboard. Generally a motherboard needs an entire redesign for new chipsets. It's no good dropping in a VIA Apollo Pro 266 over a 133A when there is no V-Link on the motherboard PCB, and there are no DDR SDRAM DIMM slots, is there?

It MAY be feasible to do it for South Bridges....replacing a 686A with a 686B or an ICH0 with an ICH2 shouldn't be too much trouble, assuming that the traces, pinout, voltages and other requirements remained the same.
