A monitor to replace Dell U2711?

I have the Dell, but it's too big and too hot - so hot that my eyes hurt because the heat keeps drying them. So I'm now selling it :(

Primarily I bought this monitor for resolution and IPS. As it was already the smallest monitor offering 2560 resolution, I'm forced to give up this part of my daydreaming.
To add insult to injury, I just bought this (note the DreamColor display which is all but perfect...)

So now I'm looking for a smaller monitor, 21" - 24" (preferrably 21), at least full HD, possibly RGB LED backlit and possibly 120Hz. The one major constraint is that it consumes less than 40W - the less the better.

I was dreaming of LG W2420R until I saw power consumption and price tag.

So is there a monitor out there for me? I can go with TN no problem as long as it renders somewhere around sRGB.

How close do you sit to the monitor?

There's a first time for everything I guess :D

I just can't believe there are no monitors that would fit my wishes :(
I suppose I could just go to HP support and ask for that monitor, soldier a connector to the cables and use that...

I bought a ST2220T which is a 21.5" Dell IPS with touch screen capability. Costs around $300. There are other 22" models that use e-ips screens you can get for a lot cheaper like the LG and Asus screens.
You won't be able to get RGB backlighting in any monitors for a decent price, and RGB backlighting uses significantly more power than edge lighting. Thus you'll probably have to live with CCFL or edge lit LED.

I find this a bit odd too. Is the middle of the monitor at eye-level? You might consider raising it up if it's sitting to low to negate the heat. Maybe some eye-drops and drink more water? Glasses are much more comfortable than contacts. Wall mount the monitor to increase distance?

Seems a shame you have to give up a really nice monitor to 'downgrade'. :(

If it were me and I really had to, I would get another Dell - U2410.

But if you're really after the 120hz gaming monitor, perhaps http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/benq_xl2410t.htm with it's low input lag would be an advantage and it meets your power requirements. Far cheaper too :)

That Benq looks interesting but I think I might go for U2311H suggested by sgrinavi.
Edit: the u2410 being a 16:10 version of 2311 still guzzles power. As if monitor manufacturers wanted us to use 1080p crap :(

Thanks for all the help guys.

Too close (0.5m), but that's exactly why I said it's too big. It can't fit comfortably into the niche I have for it so it's 25cm too close to me...

How big/small is the workplace for your computer?

If it is so small that the heat output from your LCD screen is impacting the local environment to that degree of human discomfort then the computer itself should be doing that three times over.

You'd be hard-pressed to find an LCD that consumes >100W. And hardpressed to find a desktop that consumes <300W at load.

Don't be surprised if replacing just your LCD comes to make little or no difference in your discomfort.

Sounds like you really need to just get a 17" laptop and get your total thermal budget under the 100W level altogether.

Well, I'm stuck in the corner...
But no, I solved the other problems just fine. The computer is below the desk, but all the heat is moved above it through a Reserator 2 - so no heat from the computer.

This entire ordeal started when I moved from my old Samsung 215TW to the Dell. The old monitor was nicely tucked against the wall and was always decently away from me. The new one is simply too large and is thus closer, especially when I'm doing something interesting :)
But in the last few days I started noticing that I started adapting to it. I just kinda don't lean forward any more, sit farther away from the desk, etc. As long as keyboard is still comfortably reached, I seem to be finding a better way to sit further away from the monitor.

Maybe the issue was just that I simply bought too large a monitor and needed to adjust my viewing distance accordingly, but failed miserably at doing so (even worsening it)...
