Not a rant against UPS, but I need some advice.

I have a 15 inch monitor that I need to ship out. I don't have the original box for it. What do you guys suggest I do? I could buy a box and fil it with styrofoam, but is that safe for the monitor?

What are your suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Actually, we used to ship a lot of stuff ups at my last job. What we did however is buy cans of spray foam. Its just an aerosol can, and you aim and spray and it fills the spaces around whatever you are shipping and does a good job at keeping it intact. I would use some peanuts anyways tho. I would imagine places like home depot or even ups themselves sell the spray... good luck!

yup, hard as tightly packed peanuts.. needless to say, if you filled the entire box up with the spray, the monitor would not move...

Saran :)

Another option is use some of this 2 part X30 foam that can be found in hardware stores. Mix 1cc of part A, 1cc of prt B, mix, and end up with 60ccs of foam.

The spray also expands dramatically as it dries. DOn't fill the box up, or it will come out the top like bread and harden like a big rock. You'll have to chisel it away to close the box. :)

Don't let it come in direct contact with the monitor either!

That stuff is almost impossible to get off once it sticks to something ;)

You could just use tons of bubble wrap. I'd get the ones with the big bubbles, not the tiny ones. And you may want to use a box within a box. Make sure you insure it, but UPS is picky when it comes to monitors. If it's over 1 year old you can't insure it for over $100, at least that's what they told me.

If you do use the spray foam, do it like this. Get 6 garbage bags. Put one in the bottom of the box, and fill it with the foam for the bottom first. When it starts to harden, set the monitor on top. Put four bags (one on each side) around the monitor in the box. Fill them (the foam + bags will contour around the monitor). Then put one on top of the monitor, and fill it as much as you can without using so much as to make the box unclosable. That should to it! :)
