A million dollar earmark, and they aren't sure the place exists?

Two cute little links of how disconnected Washington is...

Republican Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona, the fiscal crusader who's never met an earmark he likes, questioned Democratic Rep. Peter J. Visclosky of Indiana on the House floor Tuesday about whether the Center for Instrumented Critical Infrastructure actually exists - since, hey, it's getting like a million bucks or something.

and...

And lest we forget, Young, who used to chair the House Transportation Committee, is responsible for the so-called "Bridge to Nowhere," a proposed span connecting Ketchikan, Alaska, with the tiny island of Gravina that would have cost $315 million ? and eventually came to symbolize profligate spending under Republican rule.

"We legally steal," argued Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), defending her colleague from New Jersey.

"At this time, I do not know," the Indiana Democrat replied. "But if it does not exist, the monies could not go to it."

There is no reform, except when the press is interested and that is as rare as a honest politician.

Democrats in charge of Congress as just like Republicans in charge of Congress, the only difference is how much each gets of the earmark pie. In the end we are the ones given the shaft. Yet people will play tit for tat instead of just voting both sides out.

whats it going to take for Americans to wake up and realize that Democrat or Republican is always the wrong choice?

No, because it does not destroy the country compared to what your heroes have done.

I was unaware that Joe Theismann, Lance Armstrong, and Harold Moore had destroyed our country... you'd think I might have noticed... how odd...

Did Stephen Hawking have a hand in the destruction as well?

I agree that we better know if the place exists and if it is even worth funding---but we also have to realize that the earmark is a funding scheme that exploded during the era of the republican rubber stamp congress---and to unfairly single out only democratic abuses is an extreme case of the pot calling the Kettle black.

But only a lousy million dollars?---when we pee 2000 times that down a rat hole in Iraq each and every week is the other metric here. If we are going to look at totally wasted tax payer money, lets look at the larger frauds and abuses before we micro manage the tiny ones. Lets keep things in perspective.

Or we could ask that other question about the Republican Monty Halls who made that tax cut deal where the vast bulk of the public largess went disproportionately to the very rich---and the responsibility to pay back the borrowed money falls equally on everyone. We may not realize its another form of theft---but it still is.

And I got to love it---Young who used to head the transportation committee until the Repubs lost their majority being a earmark watchdog???---when the last transportation bill that made it into law was roundly criticized by even GWB as over laden with earmarks.

Good, at least some Republicans are still favor limited government despite the outrageous fiscal behavior of the Bush administration and are willing to say it. Good luck finding a Democrat like that.

The company that recieved the grant appears to exist!

below is from the original Politico article cited by the OP.
"UPDATE: I failed to report last night that a certificate filed with the requested funds says the money is actually earmarked to Concurrent Technologies Corporation, a nonprofit technological consulting firm. A brief search of campaign finance records shows CTC President and CEO Daniel R. DeVos, of alternately Central City and Johnstown, Pa. has contributed $7,000 to Murtha's reelection campaign since April 2002."

And score another one for Politico!

Just another attempt to poison the well after the Repubs have had their fill...

Deficits don't matter, per Dick Cheney... well, until it's time to smear the other guy with a loaded question...
