Major victory for Cindy! 1,500 more ordered to Iraq

By JOHN J. LUMPKIN, Associated Press Writer
47 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has ordered 1,500 additional troops to Iraq to provide security in advance of two upcoming votes, the military announced Wednesday.

Two infantry battalions from the 82nd Airborne Division will deploy to Iraq before the scheduled Oct. 15 referendum on the proposed constitution, and remain through the December national elections, officials said.

They will join the 138,000 U.S. troops already there. The battalions are expected to remain in Iraq for 120 days.

The military anticipates an increase in violence in Iraq in advance of the elections, with insurgents opposed to the U.S.-backed government trying to disrupt the process.

The Pentagon has temporarily increased the size of the force in Iraq twice before political milestones ? the June 2004 transfer of sovereignty and the January elections. Lt. Col. Barry Venable, a Pentagon spokesman, said those deployments helped limit the effectiveness of the insurgent campaign.

"This deployment is in support of continued progress," he said. "We are reinforcing success."

The troops are being sent at the request of Gen. George Casey, commander of the multinational forces in Iraq.

The Pentagon has already sent additional troops to Afghanistan to bolster security for September elections there.

The 82nd Airborne Division is based at Fort Bragg, N.C. It was not immediately clear when the troops would depart.

Another battalion from the 82nd Airborne is deploying to Iraq to assist with detention operations, the military recently announced.

Well, I am glad to see that her voice was heard and that she is really influencing policy. Good job, Cindy. Your son would be proud.

What a waste. As soon as we pull out, there will be a civil war. It doesn't matter what we do at this point. Time to cut our losses. We broke Iraq, and it may never be fixed.

But, but, but, the generals said they can't use more troops... at least the ones Bush didn't fire for saying they need more troops.

Iraq was broken when we invaded, and has been broken for all 80 some year of its existance, because that is what it was ment to be. We just made it worse.

Well-said.

And your's is better? At least my 2nd sentence has some truth....your title and commentary had absolutely nothing of truth except your happiness that more troops were sent and the Cindy didn't want more sent. It was a big ole lie, whether you like it or not, and the American people are starting to wake up and see it for what it was....to bad you're not on that side! :|

Oh, and instead of a :cookie:, here is a pretzel like your precious Bush choked on!

Dave hates Bush and all Republicans

I hate Bush, PNAC and the war. Not all Republicans, but I haven't found many real "fiscal-conservative, small government" brand in quite some time to root for.

Hating Bush is enough for me to ignore most of what Dave posts. If you post pro war trolls, I'll post in them. Thanks for playing and have a nice day.

Meh, about 300-400 short to replace all the lives wasted over there in this war based on lies. Let us know when you are one of the 1,500 being shipped so we can pray for you safe return, too, BB.

The same can be said for the Balkans...the only distinction between Iraq and our mission in the Balkans is that the various ethnic factions in Bosnia had grown weary of shooting each other when the Dayton Agreement was signed and we went in...however, we are still in the Balkans because were we to pull out tomorrow, those factions would be at each other's throats again.

Iraq, like the Balkans, is splintered among various ethnic and religious factions...Saddam, like Tito, kept order by playing the factions against each other, and ensuring that those who opposed his regime were silenced...fear and intimidation is the only thing the people from both these cultures know and understand.

Iraq can be fixed, but like the Balkans, it will be a long term investment...the sooner we apologize to the world and permit UN and surrounding Muslim countries to contribute to the stabilization effort, the quicker the process will become.

Wow, I post news that is just breaking and I am a troll because the message I carry doesn't coincide with the liberal fringe and their radical agenda?

I wonder if this will decrease the money she will command when she gets that all-important book deal. Had she of actually accomplished something other than make herself and the idiots at MoveOn look stupid, perhaps it would have been a best seller. Who wants to read a book from a woman who has done nothing (Aside from 'It Take a Village').

Ahhhh - the partisanship you display is impressive. You still really haven't explained why you don't show your sarcastic cookies in dave's trolls.

I'd rather not "play" with you. Thanks for the offer, though! Have a *great* day!

Daves threads generally are about the economy not dead American citizens who are dying because of this administrations lack of competence and too much arrogance.

No, you posted news that was breaking with a trolling comment about Cindy, when in fact, the news had absolutly nothing to do with her or her position other than she's against it. The decision had nothing whatsoever to do with it? Are you saying that those troops went to Iraq because she is protesting?

FuzzyBee, I told you...Dave hates Bush...I hate Bush. I ignore Dave's rants and raves because that's the true thing we both agree on.

I'll take the liberal partisan title if hating Bush gives it to me. I'm fiscally conservative and socially liberal...and I absolutely hate Bush with a passion. Oh, and I'm having a great day...you?

No, I am saying that her little stunt in TX accomplished nothing and was nothing but a political sham (just ask her x-husband and others in her circle)

If I had a dollar for everytime a liberal used the word "hate," I would be able to pay the nation's debt myself. Too funny...good luck in '08 with this nonsense.

And did I read this thread correctly, or is the OP cheering more troops being sent to Iraq just for a chance to bash Cindy Sheehan? You win the classless award...

Who says I'm voting Democrat in 06 or 08? Give me a moderate Rep. or Dem. who are fiscally conservative over any of the extremes of either side and I'll vote for them in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, we had none in the last election and anybody...and I mean anybody, was better than Bush.

Oh, and your title is/was/and always will be a troll. No use trying to sugar coat it.

That's exactly what you read and was implied by the OP.

Right, because pissing on the troops by calling the enemy freedom fighters is so much more classy....what-ev-er.

Did I say it was? Whatever Sheehan said, your comments are still less than classy. We aren't 12 years old, pointing at someone and saying "she started it" is not a good argument.
