Intersting OP/ED that brings up a good point.
Like "outsourcing" this "drop-out" factor isn't a new problem in America.

I spoke briefly with Dr. Susan Sclafani, an Asst. Sec with DOE, during the NCLB Summit in St. Louis a couple weeks ago. She alluded to some of the points found in this piece.

Don't blame the schools, blame the kids for being morons and the parents for letting them be morons.

(partly because both parents have to work to make ends meet, so one can't stay home to make sure they aren't being morons)

The education is free to them. There is no excuse 1.2 million annually can't manage to even get thru HS.

So jobs are being outsourced because we don't have enough qualified workers? Thousands of unemployed techworkers will be happy to know that ;)

I think it goes a little bit deeper than that.

The unwillingness to choose to work over taking entitlements
is the major cause of joblessness.

It is affecting millions and the millions
will be a formidable voterbase in the future.

For those that beleive that the lack of
jobs is the cause of joblessness, I say
count the number of mexicans entering the country
each day and taking jobs that no one else will take.

I would venture a guess that less than 5% of them
graduated from high school.

Oh, I don't specifically blame the schools. There is plenty of "blame" to go around about why such a high number don't actually graduate. You are absolutely correct - there is NO EXCUSE 1.2 million can't manage to get through HighSchool. We are failing them and it only hurts us all as a society and economy.

i wonder how many of those tech workers simply wouldn't allow themselves to sink to that level. they had expectations of working for a million dollar start up, and when those were debunked for the fly by night no profitability mess that most of them were they still had this irrational expectation of getting paid big $
