A low budget PC should not necessarily be based on an A64 yet.

I know alot of you newbs like to post "check out my system before I buy" threads and often times they are too book like.

Really an Athlon XP paired with a high end video card is the way to go if your on a tight budget.


Lets say an Athlon XP 2100+ T-Bred / Soltek 75FRN = $110 freakin' bucks ..OC that Athlon to 2ghz easy
Buy 2 x 256mb of PC3200 and you have a very nice set up for under $200.

Add a Geforce 6800 NU and BAM!

Now on the other hand you go buy a A64 2800+ set-up , you spend $100 more on the CPU/mobo and cut back on the video card by $100 and you have yourself a dog.



The A64 certainly outperforms the XP in most ways but the XP is still a very useable CPU , it can do anything you throw at it.



Heck, I feel like buying a wad of XPs for the chump change they are going for now. 🙂



64bit shmicksty four bit ..blah its going to be awhile before 64bit infiltrates everything. Buying a 64bit CPU now for the purpose of having a furture proof CPU is about like buying an HDTV now for the purpose of when everything goes HDTV. That's my opinion anyways.

I totally agree, i often get orders or questions from peaple there is bying or building a budget comp.
i useally use the athlon Xp 2500+ or the 2100+(like you said) because they are very easy to OC..
and besides, if your bying a new comp. and your limited by a budget, you simply don't by A64, because if you are going to invest in a new A64, you buy a mobo with PCI-E, and the PCI-E cards there are on the market right now, isn't the cheapest i've ever seen😕.. so i still highly recomend the Xp Cpu for budget comp.'s..

personally, a older pentium 4 setup isn't that bad of an idea for a budget system either.

However, for the 120 bucks it would cost for an XP system that would clock up to 2.2-2.4 GHz, there's no way you could find a comparable Intel system.
