A little video card upgrading advice

Hi All - new to the forums.

I have a P4 2.5ghz (AGP 4x) with 1 gig RAM and a Radeon 9700 Pro. I am thinking about upgrading my video card for MSFS 2004, HL2 and Doom III (among others). I am wondering whether it is worth it for me to spend $500 on the FX5900. Will I see a noticeable improvement in performance? Or am I limited more by my CPU, motherboard, etc? Thanks for any advice.
