A little PSA regarding the Dolica AX620B100 Tripod

I've seen this tripod recommended a lot for people with entry level DSLRs, so I purchased one just to try it out. I don't use a tripod very much, and when I do I rarely use a heavy lens with it. So basically all that the tripod is holding up is my 40D and maybe a 50mm or small-midsize zoom lens.

The tripod is full of features. It has 2 bubble levels and even comes with a compass! The carrying case is very nice, and comes with its own shoulder pad. However, as a tripod, the Dolica is a little lacking.

Even without that much weight on it, the Dolica has legs that are prone to twisting and flexing when even a light push. The legs are kind of stiff and hard to open with the leg locks open, and similarly hard to retract. The tripod is well made and feels sturdy, but in real use the small-diameter legs (especially the lowermost sections) cause the tripod to be shaky even with a moderately sized camera. This is a problem for long exposures or when using the tripod on uneven ground.

So, if you are a DSLR owner and using a moderately sized lens (like an XSi with a 55-250, for example), you may want to consider investing more money into a sturdier tripod instead.

Mine's going back to Amazon...

Check out Benro. They're a chinese Gitzo knockoff, but they're not too bad.
