A little OT: Can't install XP on new PC --> Working now <--

I'm having this fine Athlon 64 3500+ (90nm) standing right beside me that I'm building for a colleague, but can't install XP on it....
I could be using this PC for DC for about a week but.... 🙁

As far as I can tell the problem is that the PC only has a SATA HD, and WinXP does not recognize it properly during install. (Also has a DVD-drive)
I have tried to make a slipstreamed XP with ServicePack 2, but no luck... I have the drivers, but I can't point XP to anything but a floppy-drive for the drivers. (F6 during install). Of course I could temporarily strip one of my other PC's for a floppy-drive, but I just don't believe that it can't be done in a better/smarter way.

Do any of you know how I could get this baby crunching ASAP.... (With XP)
I really think I need to burn it in properly for my colleague, so I know it runs properly...   😉

I remeber reading about that problem somewhere else and they were not able to find a solution for the problem. Also, the SP slipstream didn't work for them either. They had to get a floppydrive to install the SATA drivers. As stupid as that is, but that's what I've read. Sorry.

All I know is that some folks actually just didn't care about the 3rd party drivers and let WinXP install right away. The only prob they had was that winxp shoed the harddrive as an IDE device and it always showed with size 0 MB. But once XP is up and running, you can install the SATA drivers afterwads.

No idea if that helps you.

🙂

I can do that partly with Win98SE, but not WinXP 🙁
When XP is finished with the first part of the install (copying files), it just stalls with an error, stating there is no harddrive attached.

Guess I have to surrender then, and temporarily strip one of my other PC's for a floppy.
CRAP!!! why haven't M$ given the possibility to point the XP installer to something else than that old @#¤% floppy drive..... It's kind of sad that it is still needed in the year 2005 !!! 🙁

I have even tried to make my own special boot CD's with the drivers integrated in the image used for emulated A-drive.... No luck either...
Guess I just didn't want to give up 😉

Nope when the install asks if you need to install any drivers tell it yes and let it install the sata driver off a disk.
I was very surprized when I set up my first p4 to find a MB bios setting for sata drives so I didn't have to do the floppy thing.

Same here, always got to copy the drivers from the cd to the floppy and use that during windows install...

Have you tried this: http://greenmachine.msfnhosting.com/READING/addraid.htm
I used that method pre SP2 with no problems, might be the solution you are looking for 🙂

Looks like a cool solution, but I have surrendered and put on a FD, and I am installing XP right now... I have made a pdf of that page tho, course it would sure be nice to have for the future. Thanks.

Hopefully I can be up and running (crunching) within an hour or so. 😀
