ok, i have had this problem with simultaneous downloads. when i do a few at once, i loose my internet (cable) connection, and have to restart my whole puter to get online again.
since Cox had me messing with drivers/protocols a while back, i think thats what caused it, and everyone tells me i need to reinstall windows.
another problem i have is my puter gets stuck in the the 'windows is shutting down' screen, and have to manually turn off the puter, when it used to be an automatic shutdown.
now, if i have the win98 cd, where do i go from there? i may be getting another harddrive anyways, so should i just copy all progs/data to that one, then format this one?
how can i reinstall all the programs i have now, if i dont have the zip files?
any help would be Grately appreciated, and any url to a website that might explain this would be great also. thanks in advance.

Buying a new drive would make this a lot easier. Pull out the old for safety and install the new as primary master. Format and install windows. Then put the old one back as the slave. Copy your files from the old to the new then you can remove the old one or reformat it and use both drives.

If you don't have the original programs you are going to be out of luck in most cases. Most programs won't run without being installed into windows although there are exceptions.

When you install the new drive, set your bios to boot from the cd-rom. Win98 should find a new HD and ask if you want to begin the install process. Follow the prompts.

If you're just doing this reinstall to solve these problems, I'll try to keep you from having to do so (anything to prevent the dreaded format C: ! - I've formatted my hd over 200 times, and the lesson that I've learned is to avoid formatting :)).

Ok, in reference to your first problem (if it really is caused by the settings in your protocols list), I'm going to need a little information about your online connection. What network card do you have? Has @home assigned you a static ip? Also, are you on a network with other computers in your house, do you share your ip with these computers, and do you share files / printers between these computers? Do you use a proxy server? Do you ever use dialup connections through a modem? Right now, what is listed when you go to network properties? Finally, do you know your IP address, subnet mask, gateway, DNS host, domain, and DNS servers? I'm sorry for so many questions, but I don't want to screw up your connection if I make assumptions.

In reference to your second problem, try this:
Go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, and run system information. In the tools menu, open system configuration. In system configuration, click on the "general" tab (if not already there), click on "Advanced," and check the box next to "Disable fast shutdown."

I hope the second works for you. In response to my questions with the first, could you please mail me at maiberger@home.com rather than posting here? Thanks, and I hope we can avoid that evil format command :p.
