my computer is doing some weird stuff. when i connect to napster and outlook, or just browse the net while DLing on another browser simultaneously, i lose my cable connection, and have to re-boot the computer to reconnect. anytime, two things are connected, i usually lose my connection, and have to reboot. weird?
also, to make things worse, my computer freezes in the 'windows is shutting down' screen, and i have to manually hold the button for a few seconds to shut my puter down.

everyone tells me to reinstall windows. what i need to know is if theres a website, etc, that can give me steps to the best approach. im buying another HD, so i will copy all programs onto it, but i need help with specifics. like, how can i reinstall programs that i dont have the disk for, back on my original had, so that they work properly. i wont be able to go thrue 'install' again, since i lost the disks. thanks in advance for any help.

Re-installing Windows may help but I wouldn't count on it. Just pop in the Windows CD and reinstall. I did a clean install and that fixed everything when I got a new HD. As for those files you have no discs for, a clean install won't let you use them. But having 2 HDs at the same time is nice since your documents are still there.

One of your problems, the trouble shutting down, is a known problem with windows 98. You can goto microsoft.com and download the critical update for it. As for the connection problem, it could be attributed to your NIC, cable connection or the amount of memory in your system.

Reinstalling Win9X from scratch, without using another HD, and without deleting ANY files:

If you're planning on getting another HD anyways, and want it to be your boot drive, you should install Win98 on it with the original HD disconnected, then connect, and move all your files to it.

Either way, you will need to reinstall all your programs from the original disks/downloads. Other than some small programs, there's no way around it.
