A little help needed w/ 2K boot loader

Hello,

I have recently installed 98 onto the first partition of my 40G Maxtor-

I intentionally left the first ~ 5g free for 98 when I was installing Win2K- I made 2K use D:

anyway, I followed w/ the setup /ntldr as stated in the FAQ's, but it did'n't work.

so I did the recovery console fixboot and it put both 98 and 2k in the boot loader........... excellent....

.......but, when I tried to select 98, it said something like: i/o error accessing boot sector file multi0disk0rdisk0partionblah blah

or something to that affect.....

.....so, I used bootpart and successfully deleted and readded the 98 partition, and it then allowed my to boot either 98 or 2k....

but now there are 2 options for Windows 2000, one says: Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, and the other says Windows 2000 (default)

but when I try to use the latter default option, it gives me that i/o error again..... (but the first option works)

I tried using boot part again, but the errorous 3rd Default doesen't even show up in the bootpart identifier.

I just want to remove it and make the 1st 2k option the default.

any help is gratefully appreciated.

Once you get into Windows 2k edit your Boot.ini file in the root of your c: drive.
Remove the lines referencing the options that do not work for you, but be careful, if you delete the wrong one then you might get hosed!

When you're dual-booting off of one hd, usually C is the letter for the both partitions with the OS's. Both are primary, and the one you're booting off of is the "active" partition while the other is "hidden." Your D designation might be the reason you're now seeing two options for Win2k.

I suggest that you get Partition Magic - great program for partitioning, setting up a dual-boot, etc. You can also correct any mistakes you've made - well, just about any mistakes 😉
