Hi ,

Im about to buy a new CPU for my brothers PC .

I wondered which choice you would recommend -

AMD Opteron 148 2.2GHz 1Mb Cache (939 Pin) - Retail with Fan @ £176.00
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 90nm (939 Pin) - Retail with Fan @ £197.00
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 90nm 1MB L2 (939 Pin) - Retail with Fan @ £175.00

I currently have an AMD 64 3200+ Winchester in the system im upgrading .

I havent really been keeping as up to date as i used too, with which CPU's are best for Overclocking , Gaming etc so i would be very grateful for some advice . :)

Everybody seems to be going the dual core route, which you might consider if multi-tasking or video encoding is important to you.

I upgraded in May from a 3200+ winnie to the SD3700+, and I think it was a worth while upgrade. If upgrading to a single core I would definately go with the 3700+ or the Opteron 148 (basically the same) over the 3800+

For both OC'ing and gaming the Opteron is by far the best pick. It's about the same $$$ and they overclock great. If you are doing a lot of heavy multitasking or graphic design type stuff then maybe dual core would be a good pick, but for a normal user the Opteron is the way to go.

Thanks for all the advice :)

I ended up getting a little more cash and bought :-

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (939 Pin) - Retail with Fan @ £233.83 :D

AMD Athlon 64 X2
ADA3800DAA5BV
LDBHE 0540VPMW

I ordered it yesterday at around 4.00pm and it arrived about 10.30am this morning very quick service from tekheads.co.uk for anyone from the uk.

Does anyone have this chip or similar ? what are they like at overclocking ?

Most people are hitting 2.4ghz pretty easily with the X2 3800+, some are getting higher too of course.

2.5 is almost the minimum. I have 2, and one only does 2500, the other 2550, my Opteron 170, does 2600, and my 4400 does 2550.
