A little confused about PCI-E 2.0 and Performance

i currently own an evga 680i and 8800gtx, and was wondering, if i upgraded to the gtx 280, would i be missing out on performance benefits seeing as my motherboard is not pci-e 2.0?

just a bit confused on the compatibility is all. i appreciate any replies. cheers
