From what I am reading it appears that people are using 60mm and 80mm (case fans?) on their heatsinks Thermalright SK-6, SK-7. Most of these case fans are 2600 rpm's. Is this adequate cooling or am I missing something here? I'm using a 7000 rpm fan tha came with my Volcano 6 (I think) Maybe Volcano 7,cant remember, But way to noisy none the less.

Also I am not an overclocker and I saw that the SK-6+ is only $9.99 at SVC.com, so I hoped to get this and attach a vantec stealth and have a much quieter cooling system for my AMD XP 1700+ for less than $20.00. Will that do the job?

Thanks, Rick

Most use various kinds of 80mm dans and yes some were initially intended as a case fan, but they usually work fine on a heatsink too.

The sk6+ specs says it only fits a 60mm fan, though most 80mm should fit on it too. Though you may have to bend the clips some. That combo you mentioned will do just fine for you. ;)

Nice tip. I think i'll go with that ;)

I would have reservations about putting that on some of AMD's hotter chips, sich as the Athlon T-Bird 1.3+ and the faster Palomino XP's. What processor are you running? What are your current temps with your Volcano 6 (that's the 60mm 7krpm fan)?

In that case, I'd say you can go ahead with the GC69- the 1700 isn't as hot as the others ;) Good luck

A rheobus would probably be your best bet. You can control the fans you already have to whatever level of noise/heat compromise you consider acceptable (and it can change on the fly).

Except the Volcano 6 doesn't ahve the airflow to noise ratio that an 80mm fan does, and the heatsink by itself isn't anything spectacular either.
Not a bad idea, but putting a rheostat/rheobus/potentiometer on a 60mm fan, with the abundance of 80mm solutions in the market, seems a little silly.

-I don't mean to flame you or sound rude or anything :p

EDIT:
Possibly worth a rheobus for any current case fans, and any new 80mm heatsink/fan acquired.

now its really quiet! not what I was looking for though.

I dont know exactly what happened. I was careful. Bought the GC69 as suggested. Carefully put thermal grease on my processor chip and attached heatsink/fan,Started my system up and no video. Took it apart and noticed the bridges looked looked chared. Put in a duron 750 with my volcano 6 and no problem. tried my XP 1700 to verify and same result. Maybe it wasnt seated properly. UHG!! now i'm running a duron.

Ah, the joys of Pentiums and their auto thermal protection. Did you examine the chip and hsf before turning it on to make sure there is no gap?
