A little bamboozled

I wont bore you withthe story, just the facts: I'me trying to get internet connection sharing working between two PC's through NIC's.

Workgroup on both machines = MSHOME
Both using on-board LAN = file sharing works all OK
Both using full, bought versions of Zonealarm = (Windows and Nvidia firewalls are turned off)

PC 1: With the DSL connection set to 192.168.0.1, subnet 255.255.255.0
PC 2: to share with set to 192.168.0.2

PC 1: Has the "share this connection with other computers on the network" option selected under the DSL dialer.

Both PC's have run through the "set-up a small business or home network", this sets PC 1 to 192.1680.1 and PC 2 to automatic IP, which then stops the file sharing from working.

I have four more PC's to connect up through a 3com 24port Switch.

Have I overlooked somthing really obvious?????

Ditch the switch and get a router and all your problems will be solved. Plus you will reap the benefits of the extra security of a hardware firewall provided by the router.

You'll be amazed at how easy it is to set up.

You can use the switch in conjunction with the router if a router with the number of ports you require is cost prohibitive. Don't know where you're located but the Sunday ads are full of low cost routers. Many with rebates.

You would have gotten better results in the Networking forum. You didn't mention was OS you are using either.

You should turn off the firewalls and see if that is blocking the ICS from working.

But I would have to agree that a router is the way to go here .

ICS is pretty week and is very shakey.

Router is $30 at walmart.

Cost limitations to gettting a router (I had one, which worked spot on, easy peesy).

All PC's have XP PS2 (except the medai box with MCE 2005 (which is XP SP2).

I have a total of six PC's to be connected up (with extra ones coming and going when friends pop round for a bit of LAN gaming).

The only router I can find will be a 4 port ADL switch (not enough CAT5/6 ports), or a wireless (half decent one for £100, plus the cards required will be too much.

What I'm trying to do is the cheapest possible - whe nI get my bonus from work then I'll be changing a lot, hardware firwall, wireless router, prober LInux box for FTP,etc

Then I'll see if PC 2 can access the dialer on PC 1..

try default gateway as 192.168.0.1
can you talk to the host PC?

Set the gateway machine to 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 and the client machine to 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0 with a default gateway of 192.168.0.1.
That should be it, problem solved

look in www.ebay.co.uk for cheaper routers. shouldn't be more than £40 for an 8 port router. don't get a brand you haven't heard of, and only get a new one. that way you are able to get support -
belkin have an excellent support network [i was on the phone for 2 hours, and eventually they fixed the problem - they kept on trying - my respects were given to them for that]
d-link are more reliable from what i have heard
