The DS's at Ft. Benning would do something similar, except 2 of them would sit together, one would scream at you to get away from him and the other would scream at you to get back here, then they'd go on and on about how the Pvt was disrespecting them by not listening to the other DS.

Man, my basic was easy in comparison. Not a whole lot of yelling, but LOTS of PT, and since the instructors knew what they were doing they earned our respect, not our fear. It's a lot better way to do things, I think. It's the Canadian way.

Heh, I used to get chewed out by the snakepit at least once a day. My TIs liked to yell at everyone equally.
They used to have this game they played with us, called Dope on a Rope. You'd approach the snake pit, they'd yell at you, then tell you to get out, then pull you back when your facing movements weren't perfect. And even if they were perfect, they'd find some reason to pull you back. Ths would go on until there were a few troops waiting behind you to get out. Our TIs wanted each troop to have their fair chance to get bitched at.


The point of the TIs yelling at troops is to raise the troops stress levels. Part of the point of any Basic Training is to see how much stress you can take before you crack. If you crack just having an intimidating individual yell at you, then you're going to self destruct under actual combat conditions.

I miss the SOS. I have it every Sunday for breakfast but I can't make it as good as they did in the USAF.

In basic, I couldn't get hungry. They fed us so well I would have liked to skip a meal but I was too scared to do it (just a kid).

In basic, I couldn't get hungry. They fed us so well I would have liked to skip a meal but I was too scared to do it (just a kid).

Lucky you. I ended up gettng pneumonia and was unable to keep foods down for over 3 weeks. I went from 160lbs to 125lbs in that same time. Gained it all back when I was in medical hold.
