A link for anyone interested in tons of cheap cruncher PC's

I happened to trek out to the CDC's warehouse last week to pick out some office furniture and noticed that they had a sh*tload of older PC's sitting around. As in: 20-30 PCs bound in plastic wrap sitting on pallets and tons of these pallets....they had literally hundreds of disused PI's and PII's (mostly Compaqs and Dells) sitting around gathering dust. I asked the guy escorting us around if they ever auction all this stuff off and he said the next auction was coming up in february. I don't have details of the exact date yet, but you should be able to find some info on GSA's website. They're pretty worthless for gaming but they would be a cheap way to acquire a ton of SETI-crunchers....someone could set up a pretty nice crunch-farm in their garage if they were so inclined. IIRC last time they had an auction, they were selling machines by the pallet at $100-200 per pallet. That's pretty hard to beat. I'll post more details as I get them.

Here are a few more specific links to the auctions and sales:

GSA Auctions.gov

Personal Property Management contact list by state

Govt surplus sale/auction schedule by state/region

You'll have to do some digging around on these sites or call to find out what inventory is available near you. Sometimes you need to be on a mailing list to find out what is available and when it is to be sold. As this is the federal gov't you're dealing with, the sites or people you call may not be very informative so it may take some persistence on your part.😉

For the record, there were also tons of monitors, laptops, printers, various server bits, sitting around as well. Again, some digging and calling should get you a list of what's available and when.

Please note: do not come crying to me when your wife hits you in the head with a frying pan after you tell her to park in the driveway as you've filled the garage with SETI-crunchers you bought at auction.😉
