I received this email from my brother-in-law who works at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. It's so good to hear that other countries are whole-heartedly on our side: not just in a political sense but also the populace itself.

Dear Friends:

I just wanted to thank those of you who have written to ask how we are doing and to express condolence and solidarity. I also want to share with you some of the positive signs of support we are witnessing here. As I left the office today several Vigili del Fuoco (Fire Engine Companies) with their officers and commanders stopped in front of the US Embassy to add to the growing carpet of flowers being taken to the embassy. As of Thursday I have seen the number of bouquets, letters and items such as candles and teddy bears growing well into the thousands. I also took time to read some of the notes and they are truly heartfelt expressions of solidarity.

On Friday afternoon the embassy community joined in one of the courtyards at the Embassy for a three minute moment of silence followed by the singing of "God Bless America". There was hardly a dry eye among the hundreds of US and Italian employees/family members gathered. The most moving moment came as we began the final course and the several hundred persons who had assembled outside the gates and lined Via Veneto began to cheer us and our great country. Moments of silence were observed throughout Italy and included the Pope.

On Thursday we (and the other 8 US Embassy families ) received a note of solidarity and condolence signed by the management, employees and neighbors that live in the complex. Neighbors have stopped by the apartment or stopped us outside to see how we are coping and express condolence.

The rest of it is personal stuff so I won't post it. Thought this might be interesting to some of you, though.
