Exactly. Ignorant minorities are just as mindlessly superstitious as rednecks, and in the same direction. If it wasn't for white entitlement causing Republicans to keep trying to disenfranchise minorities and thus leaving minorities no choice but to vote for the intellectual elite who will represent them, we liberals would be fucked. The problem is that we of the liberal elite want intellectual equals. If someone can't judge facts they can't be trusted not to veer off into fundie-land. If a person can deny evolution and climate change because of simplistic, convenient narratives, nothing is safe, so how do you engage someone like that?
We do not want to have to peddle Truth like snake oil just because some people want to be really lazy about their method of discrimination.

I tend to agree with your first paragraph, but your second is exactly why liberals/democrats continually lose the South. It isn't that there aren't intellectual equals down here, its that we tend to hold a grudge when our cultural sensibilities and way of life are continually insulted and demeaned. There are plenty of rational people down here if you simply open your eyes and your mind.
