A Lake Disappeared Overnight

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian village was left baffled Thursday after its lake disappeared overnight.

NTV television showed pictures of a giant muddy hole bathed in summer sun, while fishermen from the village of Bolotnikovo looked on disconsolately.

"It is very dangerous. If a person had been in this disaster, he would have had almost no chance of survival. The trees flew downwards, under the ground," said Dmitry Zaitsev, a local Emergencies Ministry official interviewed by the channel.

Officials in Nizhegorodskaya region, on the Volga river east of Moscow, said water in the lake might have been sucked down into an underground water-course or cave system, but some villagers had more sinister explanations.

"I am thinking, well, America has finally got to us," said one old woman, as she sat on the ground outside her house.

...Wow you are still here. 😛

On a side note I just saw that history channel show where they had this happen to a lake that a mining company accidently drilled into a salt mine and made the lake drain into it and ended up causing the river that flowed into the gulf of mexico to reverse direction and flowed north for the only time in history.

Those movies were quite scary as you watched large barges getting sucked into the whirlpool.

Fishermen? I think the lake was big enough. I'm not talking about Erie lake or some other canadian lake 😛

There was one back in the 80's (iirc) where oil drillers nailed an undergound salt dome while drilling and drained an enormous lake. Can't remember which state that was in.

I had hard time breathing reading that.

We have a 4000 acre lake in Tallahassee that disappears into a sinkhole with some regularity. In the 20 th century it went in 1900, 1907, 1909, 1932, 1935, 1936, 1957, 1982 and 1999. It hasn't refilled from that last one yet.
