A kid at my school was wearing a shirt that said...

"It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets" Voltaire

He was asked/told to get rid of the shirt.

My school is so stupid. Stupid political correctness.

If not at school, where would one learn how to make political statements and form their own opinions?

The school is afraid that his shirt might actually teach the other students something and make them look bad.

While I may not agree with the statement that this shirt is trying to make when taking into account the current situation in the country, I still think he should be allowed to make his statement.

Actually, all I have is the answer to your question. And that is "yes". What is your point?

It is a high school. You are a minor. You have limited rights in just about all cases including freedom of speech and expression.

I'm going to be an ass here and say that the major of 'political activism' within high school is ignorant rhetoric being parroted by 'rebels' or 'the misunderstood' or those wanting to appear 'deep' within their social groups.

I know I was fairly delusional back then.

Do you go to a public school? The only time kids were asked to change their clothing in my school were if they exposed cleavage, if your ass was hanging out, or if it advertised beer/smoking/sexual comments.

Voltaire ought not to be censored in school, of all places. I think the teacher just didn't want the shirt to inspire a school shooting or something.

Yes, I go to a public high school. I simply think that the teachers should be more focused on teaching than focusing on whatever political rhetoric the students are spewing.

Agreed. What do you really know in high school. really.

Nothing, which is why the kids should be exposed to all types of extreme ideas and people can find their own personal middle ground.

Did you not take government, history, and geography classes in high school?

I wonder what would happen if a kid wore a "Jesus was Wrong" shirt to their school...

(I saw Little Miss Sunshine last night, GREAT MOVIE!)

If it weren't for schools doing this stuff, what would you kids have to be all angsty and emo about?

Yeah, its a bit over reacting to something a politician said in the 78's (of the 18th century).

Still, I hate how everything someone says is taken out of context and twisted to that party's words. Its rather stupefying.

Anything that is disruptive and interferes with the teaching process goes. If the shirt causes a distraction and interfers with learning, it's gone.
