Spielberg's latest movie, A.I. - Artificial Intelligence, opens in theaters this weekend, and it is getting the most divisive reviews I've seen in a long time.
While many critics are divided over most movies for rather petty (IMO) reasons, the reasons for the divided reviews for A.I. make the movie all much more compelling. Some are calling the movie a masterpiece, while others are calling it boring and extremely schmaltzy. Universally, however, the critics are praising Haley Joel Osment's performance and proclaiming that he deserves another Oscar Nomination. Also, critics are giving Spielberg credit for his ambition in bringing a movie to life that used to exist as only an idea in the late Stanley Kubrick's mind.
In a summer of movies that seem to rely on dumbness (Pearl Harbor, the Mummy Returns, Tomb Raider, etc...), A.I., despite its title, seems to have some real intelligence behind it.
Personally, I can't wait to see A.I. this weekend. I hope I like it, but I think I won't be disappointed if I don't like it. Like most Kubrick movies of the past, initial opinions on the film are more than likely to be 100% subjective.
