A.I. -- Are you going to see it, or WHY do you hate Spielberg?!

Spielberg's latest movie, A.I. - Artificial Intelligence, opens in theaters this weekend, and it is getting the most divisive reviews I've seen in a long time.

While many critics are divided over most movies for rather petty (IMO) reasons, the reasons for the divided reviews for A.I. make the movie all much more compelling. Some are calling the movie a masterpiece, while others are calling it boring and extremely schmaltzy. Universally, however, the critics are praising Haley Joel Osment's performance and proclaiming that he deserves another Oscar Nomination. Also, critics are giving Spielberg credit for his ambition in bringing a movie to life that used to exist as only an idea in the late Stanley Kubrick's mind.

In a summer of movies that seem to rely on dumbness (Pearl Harbor, the Mummy Returns, Tomb Raider, etc...), A.I., despite its title, seems to have some real intelligence behind it.

Personally, I can't wait to see A.I. this weekend. I hope I like it, but I think I won't be disappointed if I don't like it. Like most Kubrick movies of the past, initial opinions on the film are more than likely to be 100% subjective.

What are your thoughts?

I was gonna see it, but some critics that I respect said it sucked. I heard the voiceover narration really blows too.

It's definitely a Schpeilberg movie and not a Kubrick movie.

I don't like that little kid.. And it looks like a pretty fruity movie to me IMO. He's a robot programmed to have feelings, not a movie that would float my boat.. I'm seeing Shrek today though, I love John Lifco(sp)..

Yeah I'm going to see it this weekend. Kubrick is perhaps my favorite filmmaker, and Spielberg is right up there. According to Spielberg, he kept the look & feel of the film aligned with Kubrick's vision, so it should be excellent!

After audience-pandering films like Pearl Harbor, Jurassic Park 3, and Fast & The Furious I'm excited for a deeper movie. I hope it does well at the box office.

I saw Pinhocchio when I was a child... I really don't need to see some half-assed live-action remake of it.

Do you guys know anything about the movie or it's creators? Why don't you try giving something a chance before tearing it down?

<< I was interested until I found out Spielburg was involved. >>

Okay, I have to get this off my chest -- why in the !@%^ do people hate Spielberg? What has he done to you, and why would you refuse to see his movies?!

Take a look at the major films that he's directed/will direct, according to the IMDB:

Minority Report (2002)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Amistad (1997)
Lost World: Jurassic Park, The (1997)
Schindler's List (1993)
Jurassic Park (1993)
... aka JP (1993) (USA: promotional abbreviation)
Hook (1991)
Always (1989)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Empire of the Sun (1987)
Color Purple, The (1985)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) (segment 2)
Poltergeist (1982) (uncredited)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
... aka E.T. (1982) (USA: short title)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
... aka Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) (USA: video title)
1941 (1979)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Jaws (1975)
Sugarland Express, The (1974)

Sure, Spielberg's directed some bad movies, such as Hook, Lost World, Always, and 1941, but he's also directed some of the best movies EVER. JAWS (the ORIGINAL summer blockbuster), CE3K, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, etc... Spielberg is FREAKING BRILLIANT, so get off of him, fer Chrissakes!

Unlike Michael Bay or Simon West, Spielberg more often than not makes films that (IMHO) help me be a better person. And there's NOTHING wrong with that!

At first I thought it looked like one of those cheesy-sappy movies, but from the latest previews it looks interesting (more action, more plot)

I doubt I will see it in the theaters though, as I am tired of paying that kind of money to surround myself with most "theater-goers"

As for Spielberg, I have nothing against him, but I find him a bit overrated.

:p its easy to be jaded and negative:p people reading too many reviews only ruin movies for themselves:p not saying don't read reviews, but just go to rottentomatoes.com and see what the general concensus is. many critics have a problem of giving away too mcuh in their reviews. give it a chance:p

it is an fx movie, watching it on the small screen would NOT be the same. even if you have a hdtv its no where near film resolution.

spielberg is 'brilliant' in the hollywood sense of the word. schmaltz is a good word to use to
describe 'ai'. schmaltz is certainly a recurring element throughout his film career. sometimes
he can make the gooey sentimentality work, sometimes not.

<< Also, critics are giving Spielberg credit for his ambition in bringing a movie to life that used to exist as only an idea in the late Stanley Kubrick's mind >>

spielberg has the sheer power to resurrect any dead idea into a major summer event picture.
his name and rep have unrivaled prestige.
