A hidden Patch Tuesday gem: A Windows 7 hotfix rollup

I'm a bit confused, are these hotfixes new?
Will there be improvements if your machine is not in a domain environment?

I reinstalled windows about a week ago on my laptop. It wasn't bad.

It doesn't sound like new hotfixes from the article, it sounds like they rolled a bunch of post SP1 updates into a single update now. If you have some of them, the rest will download as normal. If you have none of them (fresh install), windows update should ideally detect this and download the rolled-up version of them as a single update (similar to how a service pack is installed).

It's essentially a service pack thats not officially being called a service pack.

I'm not on that computer right now but I noticed that one of the Windows Updates for W7 was listed under important for me but is not selected by default.

I can't say I've ever noticed an update listed as important but not selected before. Anything to make of that? Best to ignore it or manually install it?

Rollups do not contain anything new unless there are patches that you have not installed. Windows Server Update Services describes Rollups as:
"A tested, cumulative set of hotfixes, security updates, critical updates, and updates packaged together for easy deployment. A rollup generally targets a specific area, such as security, or a component of a product, such as Internet Information Services".

It's not a "service pack thats not officially being called a service pack". While service packs do include a cumulative set of hotfixes, updates, etc., they also introduce new fixes that are not (and will not be) available without installation of the SP, and they almost always introduce new features and fuctionality.
