A HDD, a CD-ROM and a new burner - what's the best IDE channel setup?

Hey guys. I'm picking up a Lite-ON LTR12101R 12x/10x/32x burner later tonight and wondering: my current primary IDE controller setup is with the HDD on master and CD-ROM on slave, per normal.

Now if I was to put the burner as master on the secondary IDE channel, would I get better/worse performance out of anything? I'm going to be doing HDD to CD-RW drive burns 99% of the time and would like to optimize that connection. Any thoughts?

my config is: hdd - primary master, dvd-rom - secondary master, cd-rw - secondary slave.

i had the dvd-rom and the cd-rw switched, so that the dvd was the slave and the cd-rw was the master, but i found that ripping speed (when ripping dvds) was greatly reduced, so i switched and all was good.

your ideal setup is to keep the burner on a seperate channel from the harddrive and the CD-Rom. If you never plan to do on the fly burning, then you can keep the cd-rom and burner on the same channel. I have my harddrives running on a seperate controller card, and on the motherboard running the cd and burner.

yea can you give more info on the separate controller part? i don't know too much about that.

you can still do dvd-rom to cd-rw copies, it'll just take longer because it has to write to memory first.

If you do a lot of CD ripping from your CD-ROM, and don't do on the fly burning, then put the CD-ROM on the same channel as the CD-RW. If you want to do a lot of on-the-fly burning and not so much CD ripping from the CD-ROM, then put the CD-ROM on the primary channel with the hard drive. Basically, put the burner on the secondary IDE channel and put the CD-ROM opposite of wherever it will be writing to most of the time.

Me, hd=prim master, cd-rom=prim slave, cdrw=sec. master. Also, take a look at the literature that comes with your cdrw. Most makers will suggest the best set-up for you.

As far as a seperate controller goes, some people buy controller cards for their PC's that allow the use of more then 4 drives. My board has it built right in, so I have factory support for 8 drives. In your case, as long as the burner and reader are on seperate channels, all will be well.

Mr.Bond, what kind of motherboard do you have? I have been looking for a motherboard that support more than 4 IDE devices.

bagheera, just look for any raid motherboard. You can disable the raid and just use the extra IDE channels.

Alternatively, you could switch to SCSI and avoid all those master/slave configuration hassles :D

so if i don't have it built in, where would these controller cards be plugged in? into the existing ide slots?
