A hairdresser would tell you if you had lice, right?

I went treasure hunting at the local Goodwill thrift store today. Scored a $5 Playstation. On the way out, a friend noticed something crawling across my hat visor (An AMD Athlon64 hat from QuakeCon 2003! w00t!).

It died pretty easily.

We were worried. I inspected the rest of my hat, shook my hair over a piece of paper, etc and didn't find another one. When I got home, I went straight to Google Image Search with the search term "louse" and it looks like it could have been some of the "slimmer" looking ones.

I just had a haircut three days ago. Wouldn't the hairdresser have told me if I had lice? I figured it could have come from the thrift store donations. Then, just as I was going to the forums to post, I checked my hat one more time and found another one crawling on the inside (Much smaller, extremely hard to see).

DEATH!

Now what? My head doesn't itch but my dog is scratching like crazy even with Advantix :(

Oh, and lice does not mean a person is unsanitary for those of you who like to stereotype ;)

PS: A Google image search for "pubic louse" (AKA "Crabs") can be pretty disturbing too ;)

(Nelson) Ha-ha! (/Nelson)

In all seriousness, it actually might have come from the hairdresser - perhaps one of his/her previous clients had it or eggs, it got stuck in the clippers, and got transferred to you.

I don't even know what to say about your hat. And the fact you were wearing it.

What would you have me do? Spend money on a P4 hat?

j/k... I have a collection of stylish lids... I just couldn't find them before my friend drug me out the door right after waking up. Still, nice to represent geekdom... :D It's actually quite nice for a promo-item. The friend mentioned above wears his often. Maybe we got ours mixed up and these are HIS bugs!

The Advantix has thousands of fleas dropping off dead within seconds of the application. My doggies thank me (I'm counting applications to my friend's two dogs also. They spend too much time here) :)

Heh. Head lice are teh ev0l. I suggest you either go bald or be prepared to itch like fvck in 4 days or so.

There are also some interesting lice combs that utilize electricity to stun the little buggers when they short two teeth together (And the comb also makes an annoying beeping noise to tell you when one is there so you can take it out and dispose of the corpse. Approximately 2 weeks of daily use of the zappy comb (Heh, it also has an interesting tendency to deliver shocks across your scalp!) and p00f, no more itchy, transparent critters.

I speak from experience, BTW, my neice brought them home from elementary school and gave them to our couch, which in turn gave them to everybody!

And as for the hairdresser part - no. They assume you know and just spray their stuff down with pesticide afterwards

or you could put your hair in at least 130 degrees fahrenheit water for at least 10 minutes with some kind of special shampoo

I'm not certain, but don't you also have to carefully boil your clothes/bedding/towels etc. in order to make sure they all die? A friend was in the navy and apparently crabs spread everywhere because all the clothes were washed together and ot at a high enough temp (either that or he lied and they were all rump pirating) :Q

A standard dryer does enough heat to kill them. It's another issue in the Navy, because hot water is not a given.

Why won't he just die?

I must know something you don't... I find unopened WiFi and new official XBOX equipment routinely :) Twice now I've found unopened software for less than $3 that sold for over $250 (One to a forum member) :)

It's the ONLY place to look for all the old videogame stuff that's not on eBay...

My mom cuts hair and if someone comes into the shop with lice they have to close down for the day and sanitize. I'd have someone look thru your hair for more bugs or eggs. I believe the eggs are sticky and won't just fall out if you shake your hair. Oh, one more thing, you're unsanitary. ;)

Yesterday: I pulled out the ol' nit comb from when I was a kid in the 80's and found nothing. I had my mother visit and look through my hair and she found nothing. We looked at my hat, which I hadn't worn since finding the second bug and there was a third (This time, inside the cap). I scorched my hair with hot water in the shower and flooded my whole body with a lice treatment shampoo the next morning. Sprayed the beds and washed all linnens. Google says the dog can't get human head, body or pubic lice so I guess that's not a problem. Why would they only be in my hat? My Google sources say body lice lay eggs in clothing and only return to the skin for a meal but they look way too pigmented in all the images. Body lice can survive longer when seperated from their host though (Scary).
