I was checking a for sale newsgrop and this guy was selling his car ans "Ask for $2900", but then this guy reply with
"Ask for $2900" should be "Asking $2900".
"Ask for" should be replaced with "Asking". I am amazed I have so rarely
seen it said right, and so often seen it said wrong.

I thought there is nothing wrong with "Ask for $2900" so I check Merriam-Webster and here is what i found
" 4 : to set as a price <asked $3000 for the car> "

Now i'm wondering, should it be "Ask for", "Asking" or "Asking $2900 for..."?

Here is the original thread

I am asking for

in terms of english, both are wrong. but for an ad where you get charged by the word, both are fine.
