A good read about a recent MLG Halo 2 tournament in Chicago.

As cool as it would be to be a gamer as a job...I enjoy having a "real" life outside of the basement of my parents house.

Also imagine the social awkwardness of explaining that to the future in-laws for the first time:

"So, what do you do?"
"Um sir, I play video games. I can pwnzer your ass in Halo 2."
"...get the fvck out of my house and stop talking to my daughter."

Yeah, gaming at most is a number one hobby, I think taking it into a whole job is a bit too much, but I respect them nonetheless.

If you're signing 3-year, $250k contracts and are able to win thousands of dollars at multiple tournaments during the year, I see no reason with making it a job. It seems very lucrative, though, in being good enough to live off your earnings. It's not like professional sports leagues where you still earn money even if you come in dead last in the league (i.e. my poor Bengals this year).

Why do you say that? What's wrong with making a living playing video games? I'm sure their typical diet could use an overhaul, if that's what you're talking about, but I see nothing wrong with making a paycheck by competing in tournaments.

That puts a lot more pressure on them, imagine if sports players had their salaries halved each time they lost a game. If MLG players start losing a couple games, their whole life must take a bad turn.

Then again, I would love to watch this kind of stuff on TV. If there was a channel that just showed game competitions from Halo, CS, and Unreal Tournament, that's all I would watch. G4TV tried to do it, but the people they got on it were mostly crap.

What's wrong? First of all their vision will probably be shot by the time they are 30. Their diets are horrific. They'll probably all develop some form of arthritis or carpel tunnel syndrome. But the really sad part is their lives aren't balanced at all. It's video games all day everyday. Life was not meant to be spent in front of a TV screen, they are wasting away their youth.

I'd love to waste away my youth with $250k. Besides, their vision might actually benefit from the fast moving action (I'm not an expert, I have nothing to back up this statement), their diets are pretty bad, but not a requirement of their chosen "profession", and you can certainly getting arthritis doing a number of other jobs. These kids will only play professionally at a high level for maybe 5 years, 10 tops.

I don't feel sad for them at all. They're the best at what they do, they love what they do, and they make great money at it.

Think of it like this: They play games, we play games. Except they get payed and we pay to do it.

Now you decide which is better. Being a pro gamer isn't any different from being a pro anything else, its just that video gaming is still viewed in negative light in the US.

Life is meant to be spent in front a TV screen? What makes a TV screen different from a stupid cubicle or a computer screen? Seriously, open up your minds and start using your brain before spewing out such crap.

Wow, that David Walsh guy is from Grandville, Michigan, 10 minutes from my house. And I still don't care. Team Fortress foreva!!!!!!!!11!!!!!1one
