I think we need a stock transaction tax. I have been thinking lately that all money earned from securities should be taxed as income and just do away with capital gains.

Agreed. The banks are gonna howl, though. After all, what's good for them is good for the rest of us.

People who drive more miles are already paying more through gas taxes. Why should they now also have to pay more because of the mileage?

Not necessarily, especially with the increase of hybrids. And if more money is needed from roads, why wouldn't you tax the people driving on them?

Note that I do agree that everyone, even those who don't drive, benefits from road infrastructure, so having roads covered 100% by driving related taxes probably doesn't make sense. But it should be a pretty high percentage, and if you're not currently taking in enough why not do it on mileage as opposed to raising the gasoline tax?

Raising gasoline taxes & registration fees are a lot less cumbersome methods, and less intrusive to citizens. How many different customers use a single gas station? Thousands, most likely, reducing the overhead of collections... same wrt registration fees, which are being collected anyway.
